Corny moments and writing, however, I absolutely adore Adam.
Everyone saying each other's names felt redundant and overdone. I think listening to the audiobook made it worse no shade to the author or narrator.
Olive's friend is not a real friend, she's annoying, and their resolution felt so silly. She's in graduate school, she's not in high school. The manipulation is so apparent but I guess Olive stammers, is self deprecating, and can be soft spoken, so the emotional intelligence just feels juvenile. I know she struggles with speaking up for herself, but it irritated me how much of her dialogue was chopped off because she couldn't get the words out. So much conflict could have been avoided.
Also the lies were starting to feel overdone. I like that we're in Olive's head but she's constantly thinking about lies lies lies call her Liza Minnelli. It started to annoy me.
The men fighting and their dialogue felt corny. These men are in their 30s. Although I blame my criticism on the audiobook again, I love scientists in lab coats getting FREAKY!
Okay girl, I LUUUUV this book! My friend taught me what a “shadow daddy” was and girl, Tamlin IS THAT! He is so High Fae
Their dynamic is so different and much more distant. It takes quite a bit of time for them both to come around.
I found this to be the most historical, the Victorian pamphlet and other references to sheaths and taboo topics kept me most interested! #historyslay
Mamma Mia! I adore this book. I love 1950s Hollywood retrospects. So many twists!!
I love that our protagonist IS NOT the default white hetero woman. The LGBTQIA+, minority, and Cuban representation is so refreshing, with reflection on assimilation.
I love how analytical and methodical Evelyn's moves are. She's a brilliant woman with so many layers. Each chapter reveals there's so much more than meets the eye.
I can't wait for the tv adaptation. This book is so cinematic, the words on the page felt so vivid, I really enjoyed my brains visuals.
I could not tell you what was going on in this book, lord have mercy; this one just wasn't for me.
:(
Even better than the 1st book.
It took a while for Tristan to grow on me, however, I was so shocked at everything Evie threw at us in the last part of the book.
It felt like an afterthought but I still love it so.
WOW the amount of smut in this book versus the 1st preceded my expectations.
I hated Lord Ballentine in the 1st book but getting to see more of his thought process and learning about him softened me up. I thought he was just going to be an arrogant asshole but I was proven wrong.
I love Lucie's cause and the character development.
It was so good I read it twice
Tragic, loved the movie and and enjoyed the book even more with the movie providing additional visuals.
Wow, what a digestible read for adults and kids to discuss complex topics in an easy way! You could finish this easily in one sitting. You should read it, like now!
I love how many topics are touched on, the activity questions throughout, the gorgeous illustrations, the highlighted important words/language to learn along with a glossary of clear concise definitions. I love learning how to be a better ally and use terms correctly, understanding where they came from in the first place.
There is such rich history behind the names listed, the sad dark racial history in this world, and the brief mention of historical events along with engaging historical photography of folx of the Global Majority.
I cried while reading this book. I needed this read when I was going through an awful period in my life; this book gave me affirmation that I didn't receive from people around me.
I'm excited to keep this one on the coffee table.
I wish they taught this book in high school, it should be required reading.
Thank you Tiffany Jewell and Aurélia Durand for creating such an engaging read. Your words and imagery really resonate with me, and encourage me to be a better ally to dismantle systemic racism.
I loved the way our story unfolded in the beginning. I was living for this thriller. However, it got REAL slow and hit a dud; I give 3 stars to the middle of the book.
The ending sent me but I can't predict events as I'm watching them unfold. So it had me in a chokehold. A solid 4 stars.
I see why people recommend this book. But everything in the middle felt a little blah.
So cute and wholesome.
I really adore these illustrations, the style, the fall landscape scenes. This work was so stunning and such a sweet story.
I need some ghosturizer
What a devastating story of doomed lovers.
I originally watched the movie and bawled my eyes and heart out. The story pained me, with its beautiful well drawn out sceneries and great moments full of rich visuals, no speaking.
I was told I HAD to read the book, and my goodness I'm so glad we get 15-20 years later worth of Elio and Oliver.
The audiobook narrated by Armie Hammer was so pleasant. Great timber and inflection of voice, it truly felt like a diary. The accents were very beautiful as well.
I understand public scrutiny of their age gap, the peach scene, and vulnerable bathroom scene. After some analyzation, here are my thoughts.
Oliver never groomed Elio. Elio was always seeking something more and Oliver seemed open and encouraging for Elio to experiment and explore in a safe space with a seemingly safe person. Oliver does not seem manipulative, but it's obvious we like them bc their dynamic is romanticized. Oliver is experienced and guiding, Elio is curious and clumsy, learning how to grow into himself by mimicking Oliver.
I saw the peach scene coming (HAHA
Not as riveting as when I first read it in the 6th grade. Love the swap and change in ending, but so so sad
This book made me so sad. This is my second book diving into Greek mythology, and oh my god was it full of fate.
I teared up towards the end. The book is written so well each line feels so poetic, it was amazing to listen to.
Props to Frazer Douglas, the narrator of the audiobook. This is the best audiobook I've ever listened to! The voice acting was phenomenal, I was instantly pulled into this world watching Patroclus and Achilles grow up together. The emotion was absolutely riveting. This is a prime example of what great audiobooks sound like! It was theatrical, dramatic, NOT CORNY!! What a slay, Frazer Douglas!
This book was absolutely amazing and rich with history.
Taught me more about the harm towards Native Americans specifically the Osage than history class in school ever taught me.
What a sad story and what gross behavior of white people.
So different from the movie adaptation in soooo many ways.
However, I love the SLOW BURN of their romance. My heart is so full.
I absolutely love the LGBTQ+ and brown representation. This novel feels so progressive, light hearted in many ways but gives you a sense of hope.
Love the agenda, love this book, love the film! I would read it again
DNF'd I'm bored right off the bat :(
The jokes feel cringe, the dialogue feels corny. I was 2 hrs in and couldn't force myself to keep trudging through.
I was not expecting this book to have such a hard grasp on my attention.
It was obvious from the start, we aren't supposed to like the protagonist and needless to say, I hardly had sympathy for her.
I was shocked at all of the twists and turns in the story, I thought we were going to hit so many breaking points and boy, you're in for a ride!
I love the way the story is written from our protagonist's thoughts and perspective. It reminded me of the tv show You. We have an unreliable narrator! It was super easy to follow via audiobook.
I love the hot button topics around race, authenticity, interpretation, and ambiguity. We know the protagonist is ignorant, emotionally unintelligent, immature, but will she ever learn from her mistakes and be an ally? She's the disaster I couldn't stop looking at.
As someone else put very well, this is much like “Scott's Tots.”
