I read this anthology in order and on the whole I enjoyed it immensely. Total rating: 4 stars, individual ratings as were in my status updates, with just half a star switched up between two stories because hindsight and all that and because why not.Dim Sum Asylum - Rhys Ford 4.5/5 Fae and dragons and racial issues and an amazingly built world.Swift and the Black Dog - Ginn Hale 5/5 I haven't read a Ginn Hale story I haven't loved. Raw and real.A Queer Trade - K.J. Charles 5/5 I loved the concept of warlocks. Well, loved may not be the right word but I liked how the magic system was crafted. I've got to get back to these magpies, really, I do.Magically Delicious - Nicole Kimberling 4.5/5I honestly didn't remember the characters from Irregulars. I started to, as the story went on, but it wasn't really necessary. I remembered the concept of NIAD and that was more than enough to go on.Everyone's Afraid of Clowns - Jordan Castillo Price 4.5/5A really nice meeting with Vic and Jacob. The bits about tapping the white light and sharing the power were new to me. (I really hope that isn't spoilery but I can't be sure.) IDK when that happened and if I've read and forgotten it - which is more than possible as I reread only the first... 3? books last year. Never mind that. It didn't throw me and I really enjoyed this slice of Vic and Jacob's life. Ghost exhibitionism is totally going to be a thing. The Thirteenth Hex - Jordan L. Hawk 3/5This is my first contact with JLH's writing and I really wanted it to wow me because I have [b:Restless Spirits 23569031 Restless Spirits (Spirits, #1) Jordan L. Hawk https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1416164349s/23569031.jpg 43167599] set as my next ebook to read. And I liked the writing well enough, also the concept of familiars and withches bonding and the “scientific” side of hexes, and the investigation aspect. I was disappointed by the characters though and how their romance turned out. And I didn't really feel the chemistry between them. The Soldati Prince - Charlie Cochet 2/5The soundtrack in my head:One Direction - Stockholm SyndromeMark Ronson ft Bruno Mars - Uptown FunkAaand a song I can't remember currently but made me laugh yesterday. One Hex Too Many - Lou Harper 5/5Awesomeness. I would start rereading it right away.Josh of the Damned vs The Bathroom of Doom - Andrea Speed 3.5/5So crazy that the craziness charmed me. The boss intrigues me more than Josh or Colin to be honest. The Trouble with Hexes - Astrid Amara 3/5Once they started clearing the suspects and none were perps, it was glaringly obvious who the real perp was and that made me slightly mad. The business partner's homophobic wife, really?
One of the most memorable books this summer let me have, and probably my favourite Fitz book (of all 7 I've now read). It was engrossing and it felt very easy to get lost in it, in a good way.
The ending - after the climax (literary terms? in English? I am so not your person) - felt a little dragged out but I appreciated the calm. And I enjoyed Fitz and the prince's conversation.
I've read a book or two from this series in English, but most were in Bulgarian, hence with most of the names translated. So names are still a bit tricky for me. Important names, I mean. Like the prince. Or the menestrel. I could look them up, of course, but where would be the fun in that?
When it comes to fanfiction, I prefer canon divergence to AUs, which is the main reason I put this fic off so much. But eventually I had to give in because there just aren't enough Brian/Dom fics in the world, and this is not just a Brian/Dom fic but a fic by Astolat so it hits my buttons by default.
I admit to not really caring about the premise but I do want to read 20k more words of Brian and Dom doing dangerous things together.
When I read a book, I like to be informed beforehand regarding how much angst and pain and suffering I'm going to suffer through. In this case I was completely blindsided. Somehow I missed the warnings and felt like I've been hit by a truck.Hell, I've read angst and pain. There have been books (and fics) which put me through hell* but it was what I'd been looking for, and/or worth it. Was it worth it here? Was it????*[b:Fade 11737700 Fade (In the company of shadows, #4) Santino Hassell https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1357477154s/11737700.jpg 16686905] - I was prepared.Lymond - I was prepared - not for anything concrete but I was braced for pain.[b:The Eighth Tale 17935971 The Eighth Tale lettered https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png 25145276] I wasn't prepared but the idea of it... wow, so worth it.HPATOOTP - oh well, it was so long ago. But I felt for Harry, so much. There's a difference between not pulling your punches so your story is fresh and non-formulaic and putting them through hell for shits and giggles.Granted, it wasn't (very) graphic. (The hearts were but they didn't bother me. And now I sound creepy.) But still.Wasn't gonna mention names but I just have to say this: Robin Hobb doesn't make me feel this much, and stuff's not pretty for her characters, either. Ever. Everything that could happen to Fitz, happens to Fitz, and I don't much care. Here I cared, I cared A LOT, and I wasn't prepared for what was to happen. Should have skimmed, like I did in that TerryGoodkind novel I read with the 100 unnecessary pages of torture. Only I couldn't.Seregil's depression was realistic but could have been a little expanded upon. Not that I'm not grateful to be spared but... hell.I'll leave my thoughts on Nysander mostly unsaid. De mortuis nil nisi bene, right. I'll just say I hope he plays cards or chess or something with Dumbledore on whatever dimension fictional dead old wizards who know better than anyone else stay after their fictional death.** Hope they try to out-control each other.**Did that sentence make any sense? :O I have no idea. In short, the pain and the romance didn't correspond very well, at least for me. The latter threw me off and the former felt inadequate in response.Lastly: Should I tick the hide entire review because of spoilers box? I don't think it's too spoilery but I'm a bad judge of these things. For now I'll leave it as is.
Well written, angsty af, people will love it. I bloody hated it. I hated the flashbacks, and I especially hated the ending.
I'm so angry, honestly.
Being hit by a car doesn't make you any less of an asshole. It makes you an almost died asshole fighting for your life. Doesn't mean you skip making amends just because you lived, damn it.
