It's sad to see how many of the problems with our food system in the '70s and '80s still persist today. However, I am glad that vegetarian recipes have improved greatly - most of the recipes in this book look hideous!
Not too great. If you really want to learn about healthy eating and the impact of animals on your body and the environment, read Fast Food Nation or The Omnivore's Dilemma.
I liked the narrative style of this book. But I found it hard to connect with the characters, and I felt that it moved too slowly. A good discussion book for teens I would imagine.
Very quick read, cute short stories. Like David Sedaris, it seems like the author has really lived a lot in a few years. I preferred the stories of him as a child - slightly less introspective and more amusing. I felt like some of the stories stopped short - I needed more character development, or more of an explanation. But overall I liked it.
I won this book though a Goodreads giveaway and am so pleased that I did because I really enjoyed it. I felt as if I were living in a remote village in New Guinea with the characters. Definitely recommended.
I loved this book - I learned so much. The author writes the book as if he were teaching a university class - the theme is revisited again and again, with many different examples, each one building on the previous one. I feel like I have a strong understanding of why the world is the way it is (albeit in a very general sense). I love feeling smarter!
I loved, loved, loved the first book in this trilogy (The Golden Compass), and was so excited to read the next two. I have to say I am a little disappointed. The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass are still worthwhile, but the dialogue was often trite, and I felt like the story went in too many directions.
This book looks at the impact of diet on your health in a different way than I have previously experienced. Dr. Campbell demonstrates through numerous human and animal studies that a vegan or near-vegan diet has the power not only to prevent Western “lifestyle” diseases (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc) but to reverse them. It is powerful evidence, and I am a little surprised not to have heard of his research before, but given the power of various food lobbying organizations in the United States, I suppose I shouldn't be. It's hard to fundamentally alter your diet, but after reading this book, I feel like I least have to try.
I'm having a hard time figuring out why everyone loved this novel so much... I just couldn't get into it. The characters didn't seem at all believable to me.
Too long for too little payoff. Why Tom Wolfe thinks he can write from the perspective of a young girl from the South is beyond me. He needs to stick to subjects can identify with.
I have recommended this book to many people - it's a great story of two girls from India who grew up like sisters.
Interesting story told from the perspective of an autistic boy. You can really empathize with his confusion.
Unlike most books, I could never form a picture of what the main character looked like.
I couldn't finish this one. It's supposed to be a biography, but the author goes into explicit detail regarding what Gertrude Bell felt, thought, looked like, etc - it was just too much for me.
How much opera is it possible to attend in the 1800s in Russia? You may never know. But read this book anyway!
Interesting book that addresses the lack of knowledge of most Americans on the subject (but not practice) of religion. The book is well researched, but at times I felt that the author shot down any opinion for dealing with our collective ignorance than his own. There is a comprehensive dictionary in the back that I think I will refer to from time to time in case I forget the difference between Presbyterians and Methodists. Seriously.
This is a book that I just couldn't stop thinking about once I'd finished. I alternately abhorred Bigger and felt sorry for him and his circumstances. Could get a little tedious, but worth it.
A good read. The relationships seemed a bit implausible at times, but overall I enjoyed it.
