I learned a lot reading this book. I really wondered about other countries who have legacies of slavery as well - she didn't touch on them and I would like to know if they fit into this theory as well.
This was a very odd book. The idea behind the conspiracy is intriguing, but there were too many holes in the story, and the main character was just terribly unlikable.
I'm having a hard time figuring out why everyone loved this novel so much... I just couldn't get into it. The characters didn't seem at all believable to me.
It's sad to see how many of the problems with our food system in the '70s and '80s still persist today. However, I am glad that vegetarian recipes have improved greatly - most of the recipes in this book look hideous!
I can't wholeheartedly recommend this book, as it was very tedious at times - the author repeats herself often and it needed a lot of editing. However, if you are fascinated with cults, it is a horrifying view into the world of FLDS members.
This could have been such a good book, but it falls a bit flat. I wanted more information and details about Christian Science, but the author instead goes into great detail about her adolescent feelings about her parents and their faith.
This book is told from the author to herself, and it took me a while to get into the writing style. But it is a captivating book about growing up in rural Ireland under severe religious and financial constraints.
I won this book though a Goodreads giveaway and am so pleased that I did because I really enjoyed it. I felt as if I were living in a remote village in New Guinea with the characters. Definitely recommended.
