Absolutely amazing.
We haven't seen a Devil pairing and I was so excited to see how this would work. Of course it was so, so messed up, but I expected nothing less. I'm honestly having a hard time writing this review because everything I want to say or reference is a spoiler haha. They way they act and react, the way I got swept up in Berga's POV– forgetting the warning in the Author's Note– so some of the revelations made me gasp. Out. Loud. I will say I think this book is one of the cutest??? We get to see more calm and caring moments of them. Madden is an absolute sweetie and Berga is friggin' adorable. I mean... compared to the rest of the Devils. We have to remember Berga is still the Butcher who tests new poisons and torture methods on his enemies and Madden is Kelevra's best friend who doesn't bat an eye at killing others or death threats. Yet, I can't forget the moment in Devil May Take were he says “he is courting someone” just !!! Seriously?! So cute.
We also get more interactions from past characters which was awesome. I honestly wasn't expecting so much Bay and Sila– although I have no idea why not haha. But seeing how both groups work both separately and together to get shit done is awesome.
The weakest part is probably the antagonist. Their reasoning or what we are told is their reasoning just doesn't seem realistic especially considering how many people on the planet are terrified of the Devils (Brumal and Imperial).
3.5 stars rounded up because the first half of the book was almost a 5 star read for me. I just wasn't the hugest fan of some of the FMCs actions in the later half, but at the same time they mostly make sense for who she is as a character.
Either way I'm seriously looking forward to the next book. I really hope it is about Astra!!
Okay, so I thought this series was supposed to end here, but no. Also, this totally could have just been one book in the trilogy. The last 3 chapters in this book are so good and we know there is going to be a ton of conflict to come, which we already knew because of the epigraph in book #1. I think my biggest complaint here is how abrupt the ending is. Just BAM making it a huge cliffhanger... to a series I thought was only a trilogy lol.
I'm still interested in what comes next, so I hope more does get published.
So cheesy and cute. The audiobook was fantastic. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
Also???? Surprisingly one of the more accurate librarian characters I've ever read. Her profession was why I was so worried about diving into this book–usually I complain about inaccuracies– and as a YA Librarian I'd be even more picky, but everything was actually plausible.
Meh?
Like it's alright, I wouldn't be confused about people enjoying it, but there was so much that was too ridiculous for me. Super fast-paced too. I have... complaints and wishes for more depth, yet at the same time, I'm really curious about Wren's story soooooo I guess this wasn't too then right otherwise I wouldn't want to jump into the next series.
I... don't know. Unsettling vibes, unreliable narrator, and desperate stakes. I do see how many people will like this and I'll probably recommend it to others, but it wasn't totally my vibe. I also read this with a headache and swear I was feeling the hums and thrums haha so we can also blame that for my mid rating.
eh this one was okay. I was hoping for more romance, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the development. The story was mostly politics as they dealt with the succession of the emperor and then tying up loose ends that proved how strong they are. I prefer a little more mystery or working towards goals.
But, the writing was good and I did like all the characters.
ehhhh 3.5? Maybe closer to three.
See, I loved the narrators and I think the writing is really well done, so I would totally recommend this to people. It just wasn't for me. I wanted more present day romance and still have no idea how she changed from adamant she wouldn't get married to wanting to get married. It just... I feel like they barely interacted in the present??? So like, what changed her mind? I just wanted more romance I guess.
But yeah probably a me thing too though because I generally don't like second chance.
This series is just so so good. The artwork isn't the greatest, but the little mysteries that all connect and then the ending always making you wonder how Totonou fits into things make it so big. Little mysteries fitting into the Zodiac mystery (the overarching plot yeah?) and what the heck Totonou's past is and why he keeps getting roped into these things.
Honestly, amazing.
It stops there?!!? Are you kidding me????
I'm really enjoying it although it isn't completely engrossing. I wasn't expecting so much politics and names thrown at me right off the bat, but I'm slowly putting the pieces together. The relationship between the leads is also fun.
I'm looking forward to where this one goes and I am soooo happy I have the next in the series waiting for me at home.
Super cozy and sweet. I really did like the audiobook and the low stakes – it made it easy to multi-task to. I just... wasn't in love with it and I think some of that falls on me, not the book since I'm not a fan of alcohol and cocktails, so all the recipes bored me. Which I mean, obviously???? I should have known this going in because of the name???? But I wanted a cozy to listen to, so I gave it a go.
Ergo, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I'm sure the actual intended audience will enjoy it more. I'm not sure if I'm going to listen to the next book or not.
This was an almost 4 star read until about 75%. Then I got worried about stupid Aspen and THEN the 3rd act breakup happened and Aspen can go hit on fence pole because seriously what he did was not okay. If he wasn't one of the main characters, the makeup/”give me another chance” scene would be one readers would be clapping for Keene about staying strong and moving on.
The 3rd act breakup also didn't NEED to happen. The shitty moment could have happened and Aspen could have stepped up like he always says he would and then could have been a claiming moment– showing his commitment and willing to be uncomfortable for Keene. Instead we get promises that things have changed and he'll never hurt Keene again... as if we are supposed to forget what he also did over Summer Break??? Nah, ef him.
I love the couple pre-3rd act breakup and honestly feel so betrayed haha. I'm just going to try pretending almost a third of the book doesn't exist and give it 3 stars.
Absolutely a warm hug of a book and so absolutely cozy.
My only thing is a wish the romance was more and that we knew exactly what she did for Larren when they were younger. Like, if there was a novella even of their past then this would 100% be perfect. As it is... 98% perfect haha.
Absolutely love the magic system, the friends, found family vibes, and how much I want to make pastries and jam haha.
