Witch Child was one of my favorite books growing up. I had completely forgotten about it until I stumbled upon Celia Rees's twitter account. I then hurried to the library – found out they didn't have it in their e-reader collection, AND asked them to purchase it. They did without question, and then I borrowed it, hoping against hope the book would hold up to 20 years of recollections.
Well, reader, it totally does. This is no DOUBT a YA book, but it's good. Set in the years after the English Civil War, Witch Child tells the tale of Mary, an orphan who gets sent to America after her grandmother is killed for being a witch. She goes through so much, and still manages to keep her head held high.
A short book, but one that I will always hold dear to my heart.
