A take on Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmouth where the unknown and the strange are not automatically monsters - very heartfelt exploration of being an outsider and outcast, and America's history of concentration camps

I really enjoyed the recasting of the villains of the Cthulhu mythos as the protagonists in this book, and the the story felt quite authentic and real. That said, I didn't quite click with the story, but I think that's just a preference on my part - that's no knock on the book. Well written, well told story.

Lovecraft but from the monsters perspective? This is fascinating stuff, diving into the minds of the Deep Ones from Lovecraftian myth, completely flipping a lot of the perspective on the mythos. Here humans are very much one of the monsters to be feared, with their own bias and bigotry impacting heavily on our MC (Aphra). Ultimately the themes here are on alienation and otherness, but also found family and community. Such a rich mythos as this deserved such a story. The pathos and the sympathy generated is brilliant, and a lot of what is in here could be used as a parable towards many modern views on migrants and racial segregation. Linking it to the Japanese incarceration in the Second World War was also a master stroke giving it a good grounding in reality.

Essentially this is a character study, the interactions of the characters being the main bulk of the book. All the world building is leaning pretty much into the preexisting mythos around Miskatonic and Innsmouth. The characters that Aphra surrounds herself with are engaging and sympathetic, to counter the prejudice and alienation that exists outside of the group. The characters are all distinctive, with their own voices and feel and the group as a whole very much works.

An intriguing take on one of the most evocative mythos' out there!

Very satisfying redo of Lovecrafts Innsmouth water people.

The main character almost exclusively tells you what is going on in her head instead of you seeing it, which is unsatisfying, like eating a picture of a cookie. Add to that what seems like a cast of thousands - there are probably twice as many named characters as the action warrants. And then the final reason to give up about 70% through is that the setting is the first half of the 20th century and the dialogue both external and in her extensive internal monologue, is entirely 2017.

Now this is how it's done. A pitch-perfect Lovecraft story with a lot of nuance, a lot of heart, and a healthy dose of thoughtfulness about race, gender, sexuality, morality, and where we draw the line between humans and monsters. Come for the eldritch horrors, stay for the suspense-filled race to find the right book in the library before it falls into the wrong hands!

This is a quiet historical fantasy which is also a meditation on Lovecraft's work. I think it would be misleading to classify it with other Lovecraft-inspired works I'm familiar with, because while I did feel some foreboding, it really isn't creepy. Primarily, this book is very thoughtful, humanizing the types of people who were Lovecraft's villains. So it is an unsettling book, but not in the ways that I expect from Lovecraftian works.

There is definitely some cosmic horror going on, such as the creature with a mind vaster than humans can comprehend, the Outsider creature, and the forbidden mathematics. But none of those things feel nearly as unsettling as the recurring theme of humanity's great capacity for evil. Real-life atrocities, such as the Holocaust, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Japanese internment camps, are important in this story. There are also invented atrocities: Aphra and her brother are the only land-dwelling survivors of their people, because the US government imprisoned or killed everyone in Innsmouth. The book also spends a decent amount of time on everyday evils, such as Miskatonic preventing women from getting full educations.

Lovecraft's stories were incredibly racist, and it's very easy to find echoes of his work in today's white supremacy / anti-Semitism. I think it's pretty common in Lovecraftian transformative works to sort of thumb one's nose at that fact by adding in a lot of diversity, without actually addressing the problems in the source material. This book is also quite inclusive, but it never feels like tokenism; instead, the characters are all multi-layered, and there are meaningful explorations of everyone's identity. But this novel also goes much deeper, taking on the unfortunate truth of just how racist Lovecraft was, with repeated references to the “rumors” and “libel” that led to the government's genocide against Aphra's people. It's these kinds of whispers which were in his actual stories, and I'm sure they did contribute to real genocide.

So all of that is the background to this story, and it has definitely shaped the woman Aphra has become. The actual plot, though, surprised me; there are a lot of plot threads introduced, which I imagine will be resolved in future books, but the conflict that the characters resolve here is a fairly standard fantasy kind of thing. I didn't feel it was trite, mainly because the only point-of-view character is Aphra, an adult woman who has confidence in her own abilities, although she is still learning to use them. It seems that we usually see this type of tale from the point-of-view of a character like Audrey, a magic student who is young and a bit overpowered. It was refreshing to see it from her teacher's perspective instead. I enjoyed the focus on Aphra and Audrey's friendship, as well as the strong family-of-choice theme.

Most of the important characters in this story are female, and the book places a heavy emphasis on the importance of women making their own choices. There are also many mentions of challenges women face due to sexism, not only in the 1940s, but in any time and place, and these felt very true to my own experience. My only real complaint about the book is that I would've liked more time spent on Aphra's friendship with Charlie, and just more about Charlie in general. I like that this is mainly a book about women, but because of the first few chapters, I expected to see more of him.

This leads to an important question: What makes a monster? As children we are used to thinking of monsters as hideous, otherworldly creatures: things that crawl in the dark, that eat people, that wish humanity ill. Lovecraft???s stories, and many others besides, are rife with them. But in Winter Tide, Emrys reframes the original question ??? instead of asking ???What makes a monster???? she asks: ???Who makes a monster???? In framing the question thusly, Emrys reveals that monstrosity is really a matter of perspective: the result of a person???s own fears and prejudices. And once the reader realises this, it becomes easy to see that when a character says ???We are all monsters???one way or another???, said character is asking the reader not only to examine his or her own prejudices, but also himself or herself. It is easy to see the monsters without; it is much harder to see the monster within.

Winter Tide follows Aphra Marsh, a subspecies of human who will one day change into a near-immortal fish-like being and join her people under the sea. Until then, she and her brother must survive the hostility of other humans who don't understand her kind and who are experimenting with forces they do not fully comprehend. While the story gets off to a slow start, it picks up later on and has a satisfactory ending. The book is also part historical fiction, taking place a few years after the end of WWII. I admit that I probably missed out on some appreciation of the tale because I have not yet read any of H. P. Lovecraft's works, but despite that I still enjoyed the book.
