Every Christian without exception needs to know where he or she stands with regard to salvation. Did I save myself or did God save me? Obviously I saved myself by obeying the Gospel. I repented and I believed. However with regard to repentance and faith - was that me or was it Gods gift to me? In other words, who initiated the process and who directed me in the first place? If it was my initiative then I have something to boast about. However that cannot be the case because the text of Scripture says, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.
