I love Shirley Jackson's writing. The reader never quite knows what the expect. My only criticism is that the ending is a bit quick and not super climactic, but with all of her stories it's more about the journey than the destination.

Strange and unsettling

Incredible! Read it as a “classic to read in a day” prompt from my local library, and they really mean it! Goes so fast, lightning quick and sharp as a razor. Jackson is a master at her work, and Mary Katherine is so... she has so much neurodivergent swag. Loved it through and through.

I love it.
It got a bit scary for a while, but all is well that ends well :-D
I was horrified by all the trashed things but in the end... it's just things.
I agree with Constance. Cousin Charlie should have done that before he even entered the house. Nasty bastard.

There are such horrible people in this book that it is uncomfortable to read. It's obviously well written, with an interesting premise. But the reading of it sort of leaves you feeling kicked in the stomach.

This was such a bizarre, addictive book. Even in the final moments of the book, it felt like the story had another beat left.

I will not have tea, thank you.

Liked the atmosphere and the characterization. Interesting seeing the dynamics between the characters unfold.  If you like books with an unreliable main character/narrator, you might like it.

Sort of saw the twist midway through the story but my eyes still went wide when it was confirmed. Very atmospheric, enjoyed it and would re-read.

Final book of 2020 and it was a masterpiece

Weird and wonderful. Perspective is everything, and Jackson makes it work beautifully for the story. Not a wasted word. Brilliantly done.

Wow! I was vaguely aware of the plot, but the experience of reading it is so powerful. Mary Kat, Constance, Julian, and the others are powerful and memorable characters. There is as much left unsaid as is said. That is the best part of the book.

I enjoyed this read. It is a little creepy but not as bad as I was led to believe. I was more freighted by the townspeople than the Blackwoods. I did not feel I got a satisfactory ending I wish there was a little more...

Interesting concept but unfortunately the pay off wasn't good enough to justify the build up. An OK read given that it's only a short book.
