Tucker and the horse thief

A 12-year-old girl, posing as a boy and abused and neglected by a father who has brought her to California to help him get rich in the aftermath of the gold rush, finds both warmth and uneasiness in a friendship with a Jewish boy who does not suspect she is a girl.
