Interesting Tale of Terrible People
I enjoy the narrative voice of this story and how it doesn't hold the readers' hands when it comes to using Nigerian colloquialisms. You either figure it out from context (which is possible with the majority), look it up, or keep going without knowing. There's no convenient glossary or aside in the story to spell things out for us outsiders. And honestly? I kind of love that. I love the authenticity it lends to the narrative voice, the dialogue, and the setting.
As for the story itself, there isn't much I can say without spoiling what happens. I can say that there's only one decent person in the story and she isn't a main character, though. The main characters are a deeply selfish social media addict and a horribly misogynistic thief. The ways in which their lives intertwine are intriguing but, unfortunately, far too contrived to feel organic and not just forced along for plot convenience.
I waffled between rating this four stars or three, but the heavy use of characters being lucky beyond the suspension of disbelief - especially when facing two stages of completely inept security, for example - ultimately dragged the score down a bit for me. I'd have liked to see the villain of the story not have everything handed to them so perfectly.
Otherwise, I enjoyed this dark tale of the dangers of social media obsession and the far reaches of what selfish people are willing to do to protect their own interests.
Love these little snippets of stories that have a super fun, cool and unexpected twist.
