This book is presented as the archetypal “Being there,” and I believe it. The story of how an idiot with an eidetic memory manages to go from village curiosity to House deputy is simultaneously a fable, a highly lucid satire of Italian politics, and a story that is still presentable today, 120 years after it was first published.
It is a must-read book, a portrait of naiveté, pettiness, and the perfect Italian extravaganza.
