For me, this book was readable and engaging. As many reviewers mentioned, there is a rape scene that some may find objectionable. I felt that it was not gratuitous or tactless, but as a reader I would have liked more “fight” from Elias, the victim.
Overall the characters stayed within their roles; the good guys were good, and the bad guys were brutes. The main characters were thus very predictable in their motivations and actions. My favorite character was actually the dragon, who behaved more human that the humans themselves.
Perhaps my biggest issue with this book was the middle...after the kidnapping and before the climax. Very little happens. No escape attempts, no interaction with the castle cook, no vicious fight scene. It was as if the two main characters were sequestered in their own little world. Thankfully the story moved right along so it was not dull.
A solid 3.
