Three men on the Bummel

Really enjoyed this sequel to “Three Men in a Boat,” although nothing can really hold a candle to that!

A disappointment after the Boat (which I adored so much I read it twice in six months). There's warmth to this, but it is just not funny, or pretty. It's rather dull and drags on - by the later chapters I could hardly be bothered with it. A shame, considering the first is such a masterpiece. I will probably reread the Boat again in future, but I'll leave off the Bummel.

Starts off well, meanders a bit too much in the middle. It made me laugh out loud, which is not something that happens too often with books. Oh also, I'm now terrified of travelling to Germany.

Come molti dei lavori di Jerome, anche questo è eccezionale. La maggior parte del tempo si ha l'impressione di chiacchierare vis a vis con l'autore stesso e si riconosce in lui un tipo particolarmente simpatico e acuto, un tizio che nove volte su dieci ti fa ridere a crepapelle ma che, tra le risate, ti trasmette le sue idee sulla vita, per niente superficiali ma, al contrario, particolarmente profonde. E proprio perchè ci avete scherzato su, queste riflessioni ti rimangono particolarmente impresse nella memoria.
In particolare, in questo libro, si trasmette una morale simile a quella di “The LEGO Movie”: la società tedesca, alla fine del ‘900, viene descritta come un ambiente nel quale l'unica preoccupazione del cittadino è quella di nascere. Al resto ci pensa lo stato: il cittadino deve solo seguire le sue direttive alla lettera e potrà essere sempre sicuro di far la scelta giusta al momento giusto.”He is willing, nay, anxoius, to be controlled and regulated in all things. He disputes, not government, but the form of it”. E nota tante altre cose che credo possiano spiegare molto del ruolo della germania nel mondo negli anni seguenti, sopratutto negli anni della guerra.
In definitiva, Jerome raggiunge nelle sue opere l'apice della comicità, dell'acutezza, dell'invettiva e della riflessione; leggerlo è veramente meraviglioso, non aver avuto l'opportunità di conoscerlo un grande peccato.

This, the follow up to ‘Three Men in a Boat...' Mr Jerome(now married), Harris(also married) and George(still single), go on a (cycling)trip to the Black Forest. This tries to capture the essence of the previous book, but doesn't quite get there. I feel that he tries to hard to re-capture his youth, but portrays three middle men making fools of them abroad.
