A village in the French Alps is to be sacrificed for a hydro-electric project, which will supply electricity to southeast France. Resentment in Sain Sylvestre is bitter, and the inhabitants form a local "resistance movement" to sabotage the massive dam. Pierre, who dreams of becoming an engineer, in the end has to choose sides.
