Now I can “understand” why this is a 3 something star book.

Tem uma premissa ótima! E ótimos núcleos - como a discussão política, a guerra, o conhecimento de Lu por botânica e a relação com a magía, e uma clara demonstração de que, quando envolvemos religião e política, tudo tende a dar merda. E então, a cereja no bolo, piratas, corsários e navegantes.

Mas aí... vem a pecinha atrás das ideias.
Sou uma mera leitora, e nada mais. Por isso meu comentário sobre as decisões de qualquer escritor podem e devem ser relevadas. Só que, pra mim, foi tudo isso muito mal desenvolvido. Não é ruim, mas mesmo os plot twists, o final bafônico, e algumas revelações não... cativaram.
Senti também que os capítulos saltavam no tempo, sem muita descrição que deixa tudo meio perdido para ligar as coisas.

Uma observação (SPOILER): Lu é a filha de duas figuras políticas renomadas que some do nada, com um criminoso renomado, deixando uma carta falando que a culpa é dela, e NINGUÉM, faz NADA?? Nada mesmo?? Enfim. Falhas das construções alheias.

E tive SÉRIOS problemas com o dialeto dos Argridians - que não era nem português, nem espanhol, nem porra nenhuma.
Exemplo: Vex diz a seguinte frase para Lu “...como unha canción”, traduzido como “like a song”, declaração posta para os leitores sedentos por mesclas de dialetos e a sensualidade crônica que essas coisas trazem, principalmente, na posição que o casal estava, Vex vulverável, elogiando a casca grossa de Lu.

Se fosse português seria “Como uma canção”.
Se fosse espanhol seria “como una canción”.
“...como unha canción” pra mim é = like nail song.

Fica aí a reflexão.

O livro pode ser dividio em dois núcleos (até quase o último capítulo): Ben vs. Lu&Vex.
Ben (senhor, podereso), por maior que fosse o peso do que ele enfrentava, e a importância de seu desenvolvimento, tive zero interesse (o achei muito fraco).
Vex foi a única personagem que eu mais ou menos me interessei, pela descrição meio bonachona, e um sedutor inveretado e caolho.
Lu, é a com mais camadas, mas 90% do que a mulher pensava, não era dito, e não tem como se afeiçoar por alguém com a rispidez impulsiva que ela agia. E mesmo com a parte do choque de que esse povo enfrentou o diabo quando crianças, na minha concepção, uma faixa hetária maior se adequaria mais ao caracter e construção das personagens.

E chegamos ao par romântico, onde a atração entre este casal, que tinha tudo para ser algo como enemies to love, pode ser resumida como “nem fode, nem sai de cima”.

Acho... que não quero saber como continua.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS OH NO!!!!! Ok WOW where to begin?? First off, the diversity in this is FANTASTIC and I am THRIVING because of it. Second, I loved all of the characters SO MUCH!!!!! Third, the setting? AMAZING!!!!!! Wow wow WOW there's honestly just so much to this!!!!! I love Sara Raach's writing style so much!!!!! Also, that ending has R U I N E D ME and if I didn't have work tomorrow, I would Absolutely stay up all night starting and reading the second book!!!!! I LOVED this so So much!!!!! I didn't think I'd like it more than her first series Snow Like Ashes but here I am!!!!!!

In 2016, I read and loved Snow Like Ashes, I've since tried to continue the trilogy and have failed at getting into the second book. Then comes this book and it was beyond a disappointment.

Pros:
- The magic system here is very unique. I loved the idea of bontanial magic, however I honestly have no understanding of how it even works which is unfortunate.

Cons:
- I think I read Snow Like Ashes too fast and as a result, I did not truly grasp how much I think I just do not like Sara Raasch's writing style. This book was a struggle for me and I was listening to the audiobook. I just think there is something about how she writes that is not in my wheelhouse.
- The characters were wildly underdeveloped throughout this book and I struggled each time we switched between the three different characters. I also think it was odd that two characters were together for the majority of the book and the third was doing his own thing.
- There was also a major lack of worldbuilding and information about the world. I would have loved more background on the magic, the diety, and how the different countries were all connected. It just seemed like we jumped right into the story and the search without truly understanding the world.

This book was not enough for me to want to continue and finish the duology. I hope others have better luck than me with this book, but I think I may be done trying to read Sara Raasch's books going forward. I think her writing style is not for me and she has not been able to keep me engaged enough to continue here series (which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed Snow Like Ashes, but I think it was a fluke).
