Howard, a lonely boy unhappy with himself and home, is persuaded by Steve to explore the wilds of Dartmoor, enticed by local legend. But the moor, a fickle and treacherous place, makes Howard's quest for the Windgate impossible, and the boys are forced to shelter with Cali.
