This book feels a lot like what would happen if Firefly and Star Trek were put in a blender and the results were garnished with crumbs of The Host and a dash of Mass Effect. It has a gritty, believable atmosphere peppered with sci-fi tech, interesting lore, space exploration, and characters with depth. Beyond that, there isn't much I can say without veering into spoiler territory and I'd hate to do that since it may cheapen the experience for others.
I enjoyed this enough that I'll be continuing the series, but it is in desperate need of editing. There are so many tense shifts, grammatical issues, and missing words that it makes this relatively short installment a struggle to read at a decent pace. A couple times, I came close to giving up on the effort, only to have the story hold my interest and keep me eager to find out what would happen.
The main problem I have is that the editing issues made reading this relatively short book a never-ending process. I'm hoping the next instalments have better editors (or editors in general, since I doubt this had one).
