I've listen to the audiobook of this novel and it was amazing.
Gaiman is a wonderful writer and narrator, he really sets the scene.
The FourPlay String Quartet complemented beautifully.
4 stars.
Do not read this at night. I have never been to Scotland but I did feel like I experienced the mythical qualities of Isle of Skye. It was a gripping and rather haunting story, especially when you read the first few pages again after the book has ended. My only grouse is with the font in the comic sections.

I picked this book up on a whim. I wanted something short to read.
The story itself is interesting. When I added this to my “currently reading” shelf, I scanned the reviews on what to expect. Most reviews said that this book needs to be read multiple times. Once was enough for me. I figured out the ending at the start of the book. At times the characters seemed to blur together. The book left me with more questions than when I started. All this time the reader is drawn into the story of the cave. Why couldn't we stay there? What about the main characters parents? A few extra lines would have been nice.
In conclusion, it was a decent read for an afternoon, but I prefer Gaiman's other books more.
An extremely slight tale that would just about pass muster in an anthology but in no way deserves this lavish treatment. It's portentous, plodding and, worst of all, boring.
I really enjoyed this book, and though it was not as absorbing as Neverwhere or The Graveyard Book, it was a rich and poignant story with characters drawn deftly and with subtlety.
A strange tale, but from Neil Gaiman what more would you expect.
There are illustrations, but this is not a children's book. It's dark and eerie, in content and in the illustrations. A dwarf man goes in search of treasure in a dark mountain off the isle of Skye. But it's not that straight forwards. Neither are his motivations.
The illustrations are incredible, and I love how at times they genuinely do the talking as part of the story. Very well done.
