- Non-existent character development
- Lackluster plot. Trains do things. No lessons, no morals, nothing to be gained.
- Flat and unimaginative illustrations
- Language can feel dated for a contemporary audience
- Trains are punished for their stubbornness
- Inappropriate behaviour from Edward when he was playing with the trucks: "Edward pushed them until they were running nicely, and when they weren't expecting it he would stop; one of them would be sure to run on to another line."
