Hmmmm...where do I start with this one? So sometimes you find those books...ones that are filled with great writing and characters but where nothing is happening. It's just a lot of backstory, lives being loved, and inner emotional turmoil. Yet, you STILL just have to keep reading because well...the writing is just that good and you just have to know where it's going. Ya that's this book.
Not quite my cup of tea, primarily because so many awful things happen to the heroine and she is miserable for about 75% of the novel. I wish Chamberlain had devoted more pages to her finding her strength and her place in Hickory. In fact there is an adventure alluded to in the final pages that I wish had been portrayed instead of just mentioned.
Interesting information about the devastating polio epidemic. Those of us born since the vaccine was created have no idea how lucky we are to live without that particular fear.
