Archeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Southern Borderlands in search of the truth behind in a rocky field by the sea.
Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he's finally found it -- Not because of some scientific evidence, but because a local boy has "seen" a roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.
Here on the windswept shores, Verity may find the answer to one of the great unsolved mystery of our time. Or she may uncover secrets someone buried for a reason.

A sweet, gentle take on paranormal romance. It's more of a ghost story/light mystery. I read it for the Scottish setting which was pleasant enough but I wish the history of the ninth Roman legion had been integrated/explored more.
A little romance, a little mystery, and a little ghost. Fabulous! Scotland is always a great setting especially for a little bit of the supernatural. I feel in love with the characters. The mystery surprised me a little, but not so much that it was out of the blue. Overall a touching story with great characters and setting.
I just love Susanna Kearsley's writing. I love the way she uses magic and mysticism without going totally overboard. The way she writes relationships is also great–I enjoy watching love grow organically, rather than two people just seeing each other and being all BAM! SOULMATES! Kearsley's romances are much more realistic and believable, which makes them more enjoyable for me.
I've read several of her books, and I think this one is my second favorite of hers. Definitely recommended as a quick read full of interesting history and a sweet little love story. The only trouble with Kearsley is that she'll make you want to book a flight to Scotland post haste.
