The Sentinel

Lots of changes happening in Reacher's world, but it's still quite entertaining. There were a couple of moments I felt frustrated with the direction things were going and some leaps that felt just too far. However, reading in today while the world is spinning out of control felt very timely.

This was my introduction to Reacher, I know I know, where have I been? It's not that I haven't gotten other books or don't know who he is, the opportunity just hasn't arisen to dive in. I really enjoyed this book, it was everything that I love in a thriller. It was suspenseful with a mystery and interesting story threads and characters. It had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happening next and how everything was connected. Scott Brick performed the audiobook to perfection. Each character and emotion was given a unique voice and the transitions were smooth. There was a number of characters and it was always easy to ascertain which character's POV we were in. The production was great with no issues.

Reacher's general approach to driving was to find someone else to do it. He was capable of operating a vehicle, in a technical sense, The army had provided thorough training. He'd never killed anyone with a car. At least not by accident. He'd never had any collisions, Not unintentional ones. His problem was mainly one of temperament, Good driving called for a balance of action and reaction, speed and restraint, measurement and control. A middle ground, stable and sustained. Reacher on the other hand was built for extremes. His default was to move extremely slow or extremely fast. One moment he could appear languid, lazy, almost comatose. The next he could erupt into a frenzy of action, furious, relentless, for as long as necessary, then relapse into serene stillness until the next threat presented itself.

Just meh. Not the usual fast-paced interesting Jack Reacher. Bizarre melding of ransomware with Luddite Jack Reacher. Felt like they were trying too hard to make Reacher feel “relevant” in our highly technical 21st century, but he was doing just fine as-is.

Not a great beginning for the new Reacher. He talks too much. The fight scenes are not choreographed well. If I correctly understood the plot, I don't think it makes sense.
