“I have become a thief like the visitor BOB is. Stealing pride and hope, confidence . . .”
I waited a long time to read this and built it up in my head that it was going to be mesmerizing or something. And so–well, I don't know. It's a fine companion to the show, and certainly adds a lot of emotion to her plot line. The devastation surrounding Laura, and how she became sort of cruel because of it, is one of the reasons why I love her character so much–she feels real. In this book, she felt a little bit more like a victim than a girl until we neared the end. Jennifer Lynch was incredibly skilled at writing here, don't get me wrong, but I feel there's something missing from her depiction of Laura. Though there are some scenes in here that do recontextualize the show in a more horrible way, which I appreciate.
ALSO, Josie was done a great disservice here!!! RIP Queen!
The Secret Diary Of Laura Palmer is one of the oddest books I've read as of recent. Written in an Epistolary format, the book gives us a close and very personal look of the life of Laura Palmer.
The initial build up to her loss of innocence is done very well with disturbing metaphors and shocking imagery.
Sadly though, the shock wears off quite quickly.
The drug-filled, sex-driven, adventures of Laura Palmer drag on for far too long. The psychological aspects of the story are quite interesting and give much to those who'd like to theorize about her character. The added insight as to how she felt during the events leading up to Fire Walk With Me and eventually her death were very welcome.
In short, The Secret Diary Of Laura Palmer is an interesting expansion on the already fascinating lore of the world of Twin Peaks just without the compelling story and beautiful visuals of Fire Walk With Me.
“I know who he is.”
I didn't know this book existed until recently (although I have only just recently watched the first two seasons of the show, plus the movie Fire Walk with Me) but I think it is absolutely essential reading for those who are into Twin Peaks. It was very difficult to tear myself away from this book. It adds so much vividness and emotion to the character Laura Palmer, who viewers of the show/movie know, all told, very little about. I loved this so much; it was lucid and wild and mysterious and so, so sad.
Ok... Just ok. If you wanna know a little bit more about Laura Palmer's personality and some of the, reasons prior the events of Twin Peaks, ok, it's a book for you. But I must warn that it's totally unnecessary... Gladly, it's a short book, it took 3 hours to read.
