Fifty-two years after the pink-headed duck was last seen in the wild, Nugent set off for India in search of this rarest of birds. His quest sends him to Calcutta, Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Assam where he is the first person to paddle the Brahmaputra from Burma to Bangladesh, and along the way he realizes that what he searches for is not as important as what he has found along the way.
