A delightful classic mystery, featuring a young writer instantly condemned in public opinion and his lady love, unwillingly snarled in the same mess. Two Scotland Yard detectives get to do their best to save the day and Grant's neck.
There were a bunch of characters, so it would have been easier to keep track of all of them if I'd had time to sit down and read larger chunks at a time. The MCs were likable and the detectives were excellent and properly quirky. I remained mystified by the true villain until quite late in the tale.
An interesting observation is that, while it was published during the Great War, and no other date is given in the story, it quite obviously was set before the time (not at war, his pal was a sword for hire with overseas revolutionaries, hopping over to France for a visit) and no mention of current events was made. Escapist story, apparently.
