Rounded up from 3.5. Every time I thought I knew where it was going, there was a twist. The end was kind of meh though. Still worth reading
Wow, i am pleasantly blown away.
Such a good book!!!
Admittedly, the first third of the book was quite slow but once it picked it's pace up, it was so captivating. It had my full attention, and it was suspenseful.
I love the setting and the theme as well, and the representation of workplace sexism and disability that this has.
This made me feel a lot of empathy, and also thoughtful about what being human actually means.
An enjoyable read. Quite a different thriller than I had read before. I rally enjoyed the science fiction and autism aspects of the story. While I found the ending quite suspensful and satisfying I found the way it was written a little hard to follow. Overall still a 4 star and recommended read. Certainly very thought provoking with its depiction of AI and treatment for autism.
Honestly...perfect. I had no idea this was a sci-fi/thriller and I am SO happy it was. This was very well done and well paced.
This book is a total spin-out.
I've read J.P. Delaney's first domestic suspense novel so was expecting something similar.
I enjoyed the twists but having the main protagonist as an artificial intelligence robot is just...mind-blowing.
This book is terrific! It is a very well done thriller that kept me guessing. I can honestly say that every time I thought I had figured things out, I was surprised again. When you start the book, you are instantly drawn into the story and guessing about what has happened and who can be trusted. I can't say a lot without revealing too much about the story, and this is one book that shouldn't be ruined for anyone. In addition to the suspenseful plot, the issues about relationships, parenting, technology, and more had me thinking about these topics and I can't wait to discuss this with friends! This would make for an amazing book club selection, as there is a LOT to discuss. The author does a wonderful job of giving clues to what happened without giving too much away. Once you finish the story, the clues given all make sense and you find yourself thinking “Aha!”. For the record, I didn't guess the end of the story, and that made me like this book even more.
I have devoured every JP Delany book that I have been able to get my hands on. The Girl Before was the book I recommended to everyone the year it came out. Believe Me was so twisty that I finished it in one sitting. This was much of the same. The book starts off with a dazed Abbie waking up in what she perceives to be a hospital room. What we later realize is that Nothing is what it seems and that every page makes you more confused until you get to the very last. This book is part domestic thriller which is in his classic style. A cautionary tale of what AI's are capable of and a heart-breaking tale of a boy who has autism that you can't do anything but love. I like many readers do not know what to say without giving too much away. If you haven't read any of the books, I have mentioned I suggest starting with this one and working your way back. This is worth every minute of sleep you miss out on.
Could not put this book down and read it in less than 24 hours!? While I would normally shy away from anything Sci-Fi this one had me hooked and my god am I glad I did!
Incredible read, first by this author but I'll surely be back for more!
What a wild ride! This had a similar feel to a usual domestic thriller novel, except the wife in question isn't even the wife in question!
After the mysterious disappearance of Abbie Cullen-Scott, her husband Tim Scott uses his tech business to create a “cobot” (a companion robot) in her image. He uses photos, texts, and social media to mimic Abbie's personality almost exactly. At first, it seems that he's only done this out of grief so that he can have his wife back. As time goes on, cobot Abbie begins to wonder if that is his true intentions or if there is something more sinister going on.
The story is told in two different time lines and perspectives. One timeline is from the perspective of cobot Abbie after her creation, and the second is told from the perspective of someone inside the tech company long before human Abbie disappeared. Sometimes when an author uses this method, it breaks up the rhythm or I find that I like one perspective way more than the other. This was not the case here, as I loved them both and I found it difficult to put the book down at any point.
Most of all, I loved the misdirection and plot twists. I was pretty convinced I knew what was going on about 4 or 5 times before the end, but WOW, I never did see that ending coming!
Great read for those who love domestic thrillers with a little bit of sci-fi sprinkled in!
Thank you to NetGalley and to Ballantine for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
