After three novels, Barbara Claypole White has established herself as a unique voice in popular fiction featuring characters who are living with disabilities, illness and other major challenges. The Perfect Son is a bittersweet story about a father and son finding their way to each other after the wife/mother who completely managed their lives is stricken with a serious heart ailment. I laughed, I definitely cried, and I wanted to find out everything that happened between the last chapter and the epilogue set five years later. I guess that means the characters made a strong impression on me. White's books aren't the easiest to read because they deal with some of life's starkest realities, but they are always rewarding.
I really enjoyed this book until the very end. I thought it ended really abruptly and the epilogue was actually a little confusing for me. I had to read it a few times before I understood what was going on. Overall I thought it was a good look into how everyone in a family deals with a child's mental illness.
Honestly, I had zero expectations. If I had had to guess, I might have assumed sthg teary eyed at most.
But it was a great surprise. From learning a bit about Tourette's to the depth the author was able to give Felix and Harry, all of it was a great ride. Hats off to you, Mrs.
