Mr. Ruark narrates a semi-autobiographical account of his childhood with himself cast as "the Boy" and his two grandfathers combined into "the Old Man". The Old Man and the Boy engage in all manner of outdoor activity that was available to a person living in the southern United States in the 1920s, mainly hunting and fishing. These stories were originally articles printed in Field & Stream in the 1950's and were combined into this book.
