Worth a read if you want to grasp that the end of the west is already here.
Så var det disse stjernene da. Hvis boken handlet om det den gav seg ut for å være, fortjener den fire stjerner. Slik den faktisk ble, burde den blitt kalt “Trump and Li, a love-hate story”. Jeg plukket ut denne boken fordi jeg ønsket mer kunnskap om Sentral-Asia, men den moderne Silkeveien er tydeligvis grenseløs og har utviklet et geografisk område fra Chile til Arktis, og de fleste kapitlene handler om Kinas forsøk på å bygge seg opp som en supermakt, og USA og vestens smått patetiske forsøk på å kontre dette. Akkurat denne historien er svært interessant, og bidrar til å gi et helt nytt perspektiv på den maktkampen som vi står midt oppi mellom Øst og Vest, og søren meg om jeg er sikker på at Norge har valgt riktig side. Men det er altså ikke dette temaet boken lokker med, og den historisk sentrale delen av Silkeveien blir en parentes i en større fortelling.
Boken er også svært summerisk skrevet (med noen innslag av humor), og f.eks.Erika Fatland gir et mye mer levende bilde av Silkeveien i sine bøker Sovjetistan og Grensen. Men The New Silk Roads gav seg vel aldri ut for å være en reiseskildring heller.
Med den nye definisjonen av Silkeveien er dette altså en firestjerners bok, men det var ikke dette jeg kjøpte billett for.
