I Had Such Hopes
Ive seen this posted all over social media and liked the sound of the plot. Sadly the book didn't live up to the premise and I skipped through the last 10% to get to the end.
Lily works in publishing for a horrible boss. She's walked over at work and at home by her parents and sisters who keep trying to help her get a better job / boyfriend etc.
She sends an email to her favourite author and is really surprised when he replies. Over the course of a year the sporadic emails supposedly show them falling for each other until he ghosts her. She ends up moving in with her sister and meets her neighbour, Nick. He realises who she is but doesn't tell her how they've already met.
I liked the idea but there were lots of cliches and the writing just didn't bring me along with the story, which is a shame because I really liked the plot.
Meh. One of those books where there's no reason for the couple not to be together, and yet one has been created so the book isn't over in 50 pages.
This was so cute & bookish!! I really enjoyed this one & i'm so glad I finally had the time to pick it back up after soft dnf'ing it! The only thing that had me a little annoyed was the fact that Nick had so many opportunities to tell Lily who he was & he just didn't. It felt like he was just lying to her for so long & for what? Other than that I ate this up!!
This was one of the cutest romances that I've read. How could I not enjoy a love story between two bookish people?
Lilly and Nick's romance is essentially divided in two parts, a first one told in an epistolary style, and the second part in New York.
I am very partial to stories told in epistolary as characters feel more comfortable sharing pieces of themselves through writing. There is just less room to think about how they could be judged and analyzed because they are not facing each other, which ultimately exacerbates their connection and romantic tension.
I loved both characters from the start, particularly Lilly, and enjoyed seeing them grow into their best selves.
This book is full of delightful secondary characters and I can't wait to read Lilly's sister stories.
3.5 I'm sad because I wanted to like this more, but the end fell a bit flat. The reveal wasn't as satisfying and the secret identity aspect was a bit annoying. It was still cute and I'm glad I read it, but I was sure I was going to love it. Some of the dialogue felt trite and uninspired.
Kristina Forest is a go to author. I love her books so much. I loved Lily and Nick's story! They are both such fantastic, layered characters. If you like to read books that have emails you should read this one. And once you read this one read all of her other books.
3.5 rounded down
This was really cute!!! However, Nick is a bit insufferable
