There are so many mixed reviews with this one, and I can understand why. I feel this is more of a coming-of-age type read vs. an action-packed witches against nature read. A lot goes into Clara, her character, and her struggles in the world as the only current Ever witch.
It also touches a lot on climate issues and how changes need to be made by the shaders (humans) in order for the world to continuing to thrive.
All of this I loved as I was definitely in the mood for this one. It reads very quickly despite the seemingly endless chapters of Clara's insecurities. Normally, having a MC that is portrayed as whiny, can be grating for me and I usually find it hard to connect. While there are instances of repetition regarding Clara's insecurities, I understood why, and it didn't bother me that much.
The romance between Clara and Sang stole my heart. I couldn't imagine having to go through seasons of love the way she does, and to finally find her light in the dark was heart-warming and sweet.
I know this will not be everyone's cup of tea as the pace is a little slower with a mostly character-driven storyline, but I still recommend it. I have to say after finishing a darker and depressing read (My Dark Vanessa) this was a breath of fresh air.
I enjoyed this story. I did feel like it got a little repetitive at times, but some of the language was really lovely. I also enjoyed the attention to detail when it came to descriptions of botanicals and the atmosphere. Overall a solid witchy read with a sweet romantic touch.
