A favorite of my best friend. Rest in peace cianan I'm so glad I read this when you were here.
All the other reviews rave about this book, so there is not much more to add. The writing is incredible and really draws you in. THIS book deserves 5 stars but I recommend the it with 2 caveats.
1. There is no telling when the 3rd book is coming out. After Wheel of Time, I did not want to pick up another epic series without knowing I could finish it (thank you Brandon Sanderson). I didn't really do my research and just saw that there were 3 books in there series, so I thought it was complete. The third book is just a novella about a minor character. So read it knowing you don't know when you'll get a conclusion.
2. The second book is awful. I know it has 4.5 stars, but I do not understand the reviews. Unless you want to be stuck in a 16 year old's wet dream for what seemed like half the book... The only place the plot goes is to the bedroom. I understand that Kvothe is just telling his story, but there's only one day left and whole lot of story left to tell. The writing and the world is still great, It gets it's second star from me for that.
Like I said this book is great, and it gets and deserves 5 stars. I have difficulty recommending the series. I will probably read the 3rd one whenever it comes out, but my expectations are much lower than were before.
Gently poetic and wildly charming, succeding in what fantasies dream to be. But is only the beginning
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!
I loved the beginning it was amazing and heart wrenching and I cried like hell when Kvothe's parents died. But it got weird and really sucked for me when he was at the University.
I get that he is young during his part and the impulsivity is his flaw but it wasn't the kind of flaw I enjoy reading about. Not to mention the recurring villain that is Ambrose really really ticked me off.
I really hate it when places of learning have these toxic environments in books and this book had that. I won't say it's necessarily a bad thing to put into a story but I hate it personally so that's also another major part of why it cut off for me.
I think everything comes down to personal taste and for me this book didn't make it.
Maybe it will in the future cause there were some parts I really enjoyed. But at this point in time I can say that will not be happening.
Overall: good story with slow pace plot yet solid prose and interesting cast of characters and the major protagonist struggles and character flaws.
Might not hit for everyone but still an interesting read.
First things first: I'd like to discourage you from reading this novel because the trilogy as planned by Rothfuss is still unfinished and Kvothe's amazing story remains untold in large parts. I got this book as a gift from a colleague and despite having been similarly warned by him, I devoured it!Rothfuss has masterfully crafted a world that is both rich in detail and vivid in imagination, making it impossible for me to put down. The story centres around the life of Kvothe, an almost legendary wizard, musician and Kingkiller who is now living in obscurity as an innkeeper. The plot weaves together Kvothe's past and present, with each chapter revealing more about his past and how it has shaped the person he has become. The characters in the book are beautifully crafted, with each one having their own unique personality that adds depth and colour to the story. One of the things I loved most about “The Name of the Wind” was Rothfuss' writing style. His prose is lyrical and poetic, making even the most mundane scenes come alive with vivid imagery. This style of writing, coupled with the intricate world-building, drew me in from the very first page and kept me invested in the story until the very end. (Which made the fact that it's only the end of the book all the more aggravating!)Another aspect of the book that I found particularly impressive was the magic system. The way in which magic works in this world is both complex and fascinating, with different types of magic being tied to music and other creative expressions. Overall, I would highly recommend “The Name of the Wind” to anyone who enjoys fantasy - if only it were finished. The second instalment in the trilogy is similarly great compared to this one, albeit a bit more “explicit” in some aspects...I just hope I'll live to see the infamous “Doors of Stone”, the final novel in the trilogy, published. In contrast to, let's say George R. R. Martin, whom I've written off as a complete and unredeemable loss, I fully intend to read Rothfuss one last time.NB: If you read this and think “this author owes you nothing”, you'd generally be right but Rothfuss actually told us, the trilogy was completely finished several times and promised yearly releases, e. g. here: https://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2007/03/patrick-rothfuss-interview.htmlEven his editor is disillusioned to say the least: https://www.newsweek.com/kingkiller-chronicle-editor-believes-author-hasnt-written-anything-years-1520812Nevertheless, for what Rothfuss gave us with “The Name of the Wind” I cannot help but grudgingly award five stars out of five.
I really thought this was printed in gold when I first read it >10 years ago. Now? Now it is a disappointment, and it a disappointment of three parts:
The first disappointment is too much tell, not enough show. Kvothe is the narrator, but he is also the dam at which all emotional investment gets caught.
The second disappointment is subtler, wormier: it is the realization that what younger me had mistaken for prose is actually middle-grade overexposition on steroids: nearly a thousand empty pages stuffed with so many nonsense similes it's like an overpuffed pastry, all sweet crunch and no substance.
The third disappointment was not an easy thing for me to notice, but when I read long enough I could feel it in my reluctance to return to the book, my feeling of duty when I cracked the mammoth spine open for the hundredth time. It is the disappointment of a reader who long ago accepted she will never read the conclusion of this series, who sadly looks back on the hours and hopes sunk into these pages. It is the doomed, cut-flower disappointment in an author who has given up.
My thoughts, not actually a review.
A good chunk of The Name of the Wind sounds like something Patrick fantasized about as a young adult.
Where was all the good prose I heard about? Most of the "poetry" writing style sounds like something I would've come up with when I'm depressed and look back at how cringe it was.
Denna is an absolutely horrible character. Everything about her is toxic. F**k her.
If I ever get a fireplace this book will be my first firewood then it won't be money wasted and I can drink to the time lost.
I really enjoyed this book, I thought the world, characters and magic system were very well written and engaging. My only gripe would be the pacing felt a tad slow but it didn't bother me too much as the book kept me hooked regardless.
Very much looking forward to the 2nd book, and already dreading waiting for the 3rd
Found this Crown Jewel a bit late, no idea why. Absolutely loved it. Loved the writing which simply seemed to flow, sometimes faster sometimes slower. When fast sometimes I wanted to slow down to absorb the surroundings but then also I wanted the page turned... what's going to happen?
When writing in the now, around the Inn, Rothfuss aggravated my desire to know what was happening in the past, but then how had the past got our hero to the Inn and what was really going on. The counterpoint of the two times periods was a brilliant engine that drove the story always leaving me hungry for more. Dam such a brilliantly frustrating book.! A few books in any readers reading history will have this level of impact particularly as they grow older with the feeling “enjoyed that but read it before”. “Name” was for me was a blast of fresh cold bracing wind. Going to re-read along with the sequel and do a longer more considered review which it justly deserves on my major review journal https://smallestroomreviews.wordpress.com/
Such a fun book that got progressively better the more I read. It's the new “longest book I've ever read” but I can't wait to get into the sequel.
Patrick Rothfuss is an incredible writer. If not for a couple parts that overstayed their welcome this would be a solid 5/5 novel for me.
fun, enjoyable read
lame, one-note characters
insane main character power fantasy
fun!
Beautifully magical writing and dialogue, very fun and engaging with its limited magic system, and characters that have fantastic chemistry through dialogue and interactions. Really great listen.
4.9/5
A Journey into Legends: My Third Encounter with a Beloved Book
When you love reading and find someone special with whom to share that passion, the experience of delving into a book becomes not only easier but also immensely enjoyable. This was the case for us as we embarked on our reading adventure, completing this captivating book in just over two months. The time spent was undeniably worth it, leaving me with a profound appreciation for the story. As a reader, I must confess that this book ranks among the best I've ever encountered, even though I'm not typically drawn to the fantasy genre. Nevertheless, my love for it has inspired me to explore more fantasy books in search of similar wonders.
However, it's essential to clarify what this book is not. It does not follow the typical fast-paced narrative of epic heroism that often characterizes fantasy novels. Instead, it takes a deliberate and measured approach, focusing on the development of an extraordinarily intelligent yet ordinary boy. The story charts his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a legendary figure, delving into the challenges he faces in earning and living up to that reputation.
While some may argue that the book lacks absolute originality in terms of its world and characters, it does introduce an inventive twist. The story revolves around the coming-of-age of a young boy, his impressive intellect, and the existence of a logical type of magic. This combination paves the way for a unique narrative that sets it apart from other fantasy novels.
Having explored numerous fantasy novels throughout the year, this book remains a standout five-star read for both of us. Its imaginative storytelling has left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds, making it thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
I'm amazed I even finished this book. It was entertaining at times, but the main character was insufferable. The story was more long-winded than it needed to be. I almost gave it 3 stars, but I have no desire to read the 2nd book in the trilogy, so I don't think it deserves that. I'm glad I borrowed this book from the library and didn't spend money on it.
