After the Civil War, one of the rare national unifiers was a vehement anti-Mormonism, challenging the boundaries of what was considered tolerable. Due to the fecundity of northern archives, the tale of Christian reaction has largely sounded yankee tones. But Mormonism encroached into the South as well, triggering spasms of cleansing violence.
