This group of hospice teens are shouldering the heaviest of burdens. The stories they tell are actually creative and enjoyable. I never read a book by Christopher Pike and so Happy this was my 1st one. Can't wait to read more.
This book was not at all what I expected to be. It is not a spooky or mysterious story, as the synopsis paints it out to be. Instead, it is a reflection on life and death, told through beautiful, thought provoking tales. Even though it wasn't the fun ghost story I was expecting, I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and will probably be thinking about it for a while.
I don't know how I missed this one when I was a kid, but I did. I'm actually glad I did. This was.....not his best work. I actually enjoyed the story behind why he wrote this book more than I did the “stories” the kids tell. Some of them are just really out there in a cringy way.
I thought I might check out the Netflix series, and I wanted to read the book first.
I read this book several times as a kid, and wanted to re-read it in preparation for Mike Flanagan's Netflix adaptation. This and [b:Whisper of Death 137964 Whisper of Death Christopher Pike https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1378900166l/137964.SY75.jpg 1546535] were my two most-read of Pike's books, so I had hazy memories of it. I mostly liked the stories-within-a-story format of both books, but man, these stories were blehhhhhh. The only one I remembered with any sort of clarity was Anya's “deal with the devil” one. The general premise is interesting, but I did not care when I was reading about Ilonka's past lives or her deep everlasting love for Kevin. I dunno, I'm still excited about the show because like I said, the bare-bones plot of it is solid, but the execution didn't work for me. 2 of Ilonka's long-winded stories about her Master and reality being an illusion and whatever out of 5.
This is 90s YA paranormal. I love it, but before you pick this up know what you are getting.
This isn't my favorite Christopher Pike book. The chatacters are great. The setting a bit unrealistic, but again 90s YA. It is more theological than I expected. That's both good and bad.
