Truyện này thì hơi advanced, Manh đọc trong AP LIT. Phải xài từ điển nhìu :D. Nhưng mà vẫn hay, đọc thì cảm thấy cay đắng rất nhiều 🥲
I read this in three settings but it took me a month to actually finish it. Part of me understands why it is so famous, but I didn't read anything as life changing as I expected to - though that is possibly a fault on my part for having high expectations. I was familiar with the concept of a man waking up as an insect but had no knowledge of the text beyond that. The ending surprised me, and I did enjoy the process of reading this, but we shall see if it affects my thinking in the long term. I am glad it was not very long. If it was the length of a full novel I highly doubt I would have been persueded to read it.
3.2 ★
this was nothing like i was expecting but also everything i was expecting it to be, and so i have no idea what to think of it. it was a quick read, even if i tried to take my time to fully take it in
Kind of sad to see what happened in the story. Most frightening thing is... Probably it's a reality if something like that we're to happen to anyone.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
What an absolute blast this is. I know that’s a weird thing to say about a book that focuses on topics such as loss of humanity, alienation, poverty and parental abandonment but consuming The Metamorphosis is some of the most fun I’ve had reading in a long time. It helped that I listened to it on audiobook with a pretty good reader and a really strong translation but I really think this is just an excellent book. I’m normally not someone who notices when something is well-paced but The Metamorphosis is so strong in that category that I immediately noticed it. Nothing lingers for a sentence longer than it should. It’s very short and yet each section feels complete and by the end of the book a satisfying narrative has been told. Each character is introduced at the right time. Each vignette works on its own as well as within the complex of the overall book. Each concept is focused on for the right amount of time. It just works on every level and makes this a rare book that is both very interesting to analyze on a deep literary level while also being really fun to read from a casual perspective. So often I complain that some books are really deep but not fun to read or the other way around but this one is both. It’s just wonderful.
I'm no literary scholar, but I still want to document my thoughts.
A weird story, but so effective. For the longest time, I kept getting from this story themes of mental illness and how othering that experience can feel and how it changes how people see you. Well, the consensus doesn't seem to be that those were the themes being explored, but I did want to mention it.A part of the story that had me quite shocked was how much emphasis Gregor put onto his work and going back to work, even in the face of such a shocking transformation. Work was giving him a sense of purpose, direction, and worth (for self-worth and worth in the eyes of his family). My takeaway is that the more isolated he became and the less like a human his family treated him, the further away his humanity felt. I also enjoyed how his death also allowed for a metamorphosis in its own right to occur to the family and its members.
This edition in particular has a wonderful introduction (although slightly spoilery!), a timeline of his life, some background information, and multiple critical essays about Kafka as an author and The Metamorphosis in itself.
Overall, it was a good time. It's short, but I loved reading it slowly, with pen and tabs in hand.
After reading the story, I'm only left thinking of what to take away here. It's easy to read and the short story covers a sizable timeframe but there is not much happening. Considering the title, I was expecting more of a metamorphosis of the character apart from what happened in the last few pages.
I knew that he was gonna have a bad time being a cockroach but I was not prepared for the fact that people would tell him he still needed to go to work as a cockroach. True hell.
I usually don't read classics so it feels weird to be rating this.
I enjoyed this.
Especially now that I sit and think about how the story runs so much deeper. The more that i think about it the more I feel with Gregor Samsa's feeling of loneliness, hatred, self loathing, and how tired he is with his life of constant hard work. A life where his entire self worth is tied to how productive he is. Even to this day it's definitely open to interpretation, and remains relevant in my opinion.
So beautifully well done, subtle, but puts the point across.
Sadly the version I have of this is badly translated and I found some of the sentences were grammatically incorrect or so convoluted my eyes started to get heavy. However, I'm certain if I read this again I'd score it higher. I grasped a good deal of what Kafka was trying to convey and the idea of your family being repulsed by your change, attempting to care for you out of duty then slowly resenting you is worse than the physical change itself. The constant worry about work, finances and the rest of what he thought would be his return to human life was so easy to judge from an outside perspective. I just wish the copy I bought had been better, if it turns out their all written that way then I'm out
Eu gostei MUITO Desse livro.
I almost cried which means a lot because I listened to this audiobook in a car full of my family and I hate crying in front of people. It gave me much to think about and filled me with intense existential dread

Two insights amazed me:
1. How long back this was written, and its so simple
2. The difficulties Kafka faced when he tried to pursue his calling, and how well its portrayed in the absurd setting of him being metamorphosised to an insect
Ce am citit pana acum de la Kafka a fost superb, dar asa m-au lasat fara speranta... daca si Castelul e asa, e cam clar prin ce a trecut saracu scriitor :)
