Heartbreaking and beautiful, and a great primer for The Calculating Stars.

I read this a few years ago, when I read Word Puppets, which is a great short story collection.

Recently I read The Calculating Stars, and realized I didn't remember this story very well and decided to reread it. Now knowing Elma and Nathaniel, it made me cry.

Mary Robinette Kowal can do no wrong. I love every series by her, and this one doesn't disappoint. This short story is heart breaking and beautiful.

I didn't intend to start my day off by weeping, but I'm not sorry I did. Not sure what the point is of the Wizard of Oz reference, but this was a deeply affecting story that had more to do with human relationships than actual space stuff.

Cool concept and interesting content. The writing at times was not my favorite style, it seemed a little forced and disjointed.

In a world where Mars has been colonised, this 31 page story follows an Astronaut Elma who has to make a difficult decision, as well as exploring her past difficult decisions.

I enjoyed this, and would consider reading other works by her. Kowal created a really strong, believable character in Elma.
