This was an interesting book about slavery, race and families in Manchester County, Virginia. I liked the interactions between the characters, including Moses and Caldonia.
I am glad to have read this book but, frankly, it was a struggle. At times I found the prose to be very difficult and I found myslef having to frequently re-read entire paragraphs.
I thought this one was just OK. There were a ton of characters and with the hoping back and forth in time I found it a rather difficult read. There were to many characters for any of them to be developed enough and in consequence I didn't really care what happened to any of them. It is a shame really because I am usually drawn to books set during this time period.
