What happens when a group of friends, most of whom have known each other since their Oxford days, travel to the Scottish Highlands to stay at a secluded lodge for a New Year's celebration? Throw in some secrets, a lot of drink and a baggie of drugs, and you've got the perfect recipe for murder. But who is the victim, and who is the killer?
The answer to both questions is drawn out. Apart from the gamekeeper and the manager of the lodge, none of the remaining characters are very likeable, so it's fun to guess which one is murdered and which one did the deed. (It didn't take me long to guess correctly on both counts.)
The Hunting Party is an enjoyable read, a typical whodunnit with plenty of twists, and more than a few red herrings to throw the reader off the scent.
