I enjoyed this mystery/thriller.
The group of frenemies were unlikeable. Everyone has good reason to dislike each other. The breadcrumbs to solve where scattered along the way. And although the ending was mostly guessed correctly, it was done well and I was satisfied with it.
очень очень неплохо, особенно то, что полкниги не понятно не только кто убийца, но даже кто жертва
I was hooked all the way through, I loved the relationships between the friends. The mystery was fun to work out. However I hoped there was a bit more of a twist to the ending it was a bit predictable. Though still very enjoyable book. I’m not sure of the writing style. It seemed a bit confused sometimes. It’s a multi pov book and each pov was that characters thoughts however sometimes it was talking more to the reader, like a diary entry but it’s supposed to be thoughts. It was still good but I felt like that was a bit confused.
Got a bit slow when I was about 60-70% through but pushed through, the ending is great!!
I liked how it was written- mixed perspective and timeline- but what was written was kinda meh at times.
What happens when a group of friends, most of whom have known each other since their Oxford days, travel to the Scottish Highlands to stay at a secluded lodge for a New Year's celebration? Throw in some secrets, a lot of drink and a baggie of drugs, and you've got the perfect recipe for murder. But who is the victim, and who is the killer?
The answer to both questions is drawn out. Apart from the gamekeeper and the manager of the lodge, none of the remaining characters are very likeable, so it's fun to guess which one is murdered and which one did the deed. (It didn't take me long to guess correctly on both counts.)
The Hunting Party is an enjoyable read, a typical whodunnit with plenty of twists, and more than a few red herrings to throw the reader off the scent.
it's the character analysis of the secret history and the mystery of agatha christie's novels combined
Another Lucy Foley book described as thrilling and suspenseful which I found to be neither. She's really good at creating unlikeable characters, I'll give her that, but they're also extremely uninteresting to follow. When most of the book consist of listening to their internal monologue or watching them interact with one another, it gets boring. I'd say the last 5 chapters were the only ones with any suspense, and at that point I was just ready to be done with the story.
I read The Guest List, so I wanted to check out another book from Lucy Foley. Despite this story having a different setting, a different set of characters, and different backstories for each one, I was just getting a whole bunch of deja vu from the other book I read from her. It feels like I'm reading the same exact book but only with a different coat of paint... I don't know why anyone would ever paint a book, but I hope you get what I'm saying.
I have heard many things about Lucy Foley and her works so I was very excited to finally pick one of them up and give it a go.
The atmosphere was what had me hooked from start to finish. The idea of being isolated from civilisation whilst being a part of a whodunnit murder mystery is eerily fantastic. This is exactly what you want when you look for a good Thriller to read.
The characters weren't likeable. They were obnoxious, entitled and they each had their secrets and pasts that they wanted to keep hidden from one another. It's because of this that the victim not being revealed until the very end of the book was such a great way to keep us guessing and wanting more.
The reason why I couldn't rate this any higher than I had was that the ending felt rushed and I felt it left some questions unanswered.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and I am excited to check out more by this author.
The Hunting Party is kind of [b:No Exit|39938177|No Exit|Taylor Adams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1541624527l/39938177.SY75.jpg|56940541] meets Glass Onion in its combination of being confined to dangerous circumstances by winter weather and insufferable self-absorbed rich people.
The premise is simple enough: every year, a group of college friends vacation together. One person in the group plans the trip. This year they're off to an exclusive remote wilderness hunting lodge for New Year's. But then one of the guests goes missing. When she's found, she's dead. And not due to exposure! Someone killed her is what I'm getting at.
Thrillers are not my usual genre, because the twists often make me mad. Either because I think they are predictable or silly. I also think they can stigmatize mental illness, which is already plenty stigmatized. Unfortunately, a little of all of that happened in the end with The Hunting Party. I saw two bigger twists coming far ahead of time. There was another twist that I did not see coming but found to be a goofy aside more than anything.
It's a shame, because the audiobook is fantastically done. Full cast, charming accents, narration that felt unreliable but in a way that felt more human than frustrating. And to be fair, I was wildly guessing at every person and theory for the first chunk of the book. There was a nice slow build with little hints making you second guess things. It was really fun to listen to! I just felt let down in the end because I wanted to have a shocking reveal.
Oh also, something that extremely threw me off was how Doug's chapters were in third person but everyone else spoke in first person? Why? I kept waiting for there to be a reason behind that. Anyway. If you want a well-produced audiobook that feels fitting for this time of year and you don't share my grudge against thrillers, you may well have fun weaving through this twisty little thing. It's also on hoopla if you want it immediately.
Quite entertaining and kept me interested most of the way through, but once the revelations started, the foundation and credibility came apart. It really strain credibility to have so many deeply messed up people all in one place, especially one as isolated as the setting of this one. Foley did the same thing in The Guest List, but somehow it didn't bother me as much. Or maybe it depends which one you read first. The old-friends-gathered-in-an-isolated-spot formula doesn't do well second time around. I can't recommend this novel.
Erg spannend. Leuk dat er verschillende POV's waren en dat je tussen heden en verleden wisseld.
Well-paced and gripping from the very beginning! The audiobook cast was really great and helped keep the various threads separate in my mind. Looking forward to reading more by this author!
A nice mystery, a la Agatha Christie. A quick, enjoyable read with fun twists and turns.
This book is your classic “who done it” and features all elements characteristic to the genre. I saw people comparing it to Agatha Christie's novels and while i can see their point, i don't think it's fair to compare the OG classics with this modern remake. Overall I found myself enjoying the book and i was always hungry for more, to put it this way. All the anticipation and suspense surrounding the murder was what determined me to keep on turning the pages, yet I wouldn't say that the plot was mind blowing. Right after i finished it, i initially gave this book 4 stars, but after some time passed, i changed my rating to a 3 star because the more i though about it, the more i found issues that annoyed me lmao
I LOVED [b:The Guest List 51933429 The Guest List Lucy Foley https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1580194251l/51933429.SY75.jpg 73094861] so I was kinda excited for this but sadly it was so disappointing!75% in I was convinced it was a 5 star or at least 4.5 star coz I was really enjoying the story, really enjoying the characters and the last 15% RUINED THE BOOK:((((The book had soo much potential to be a fav; An isolated setting ✔️ Winter setting ✔️ A murder to solve ✔️ Multiple povs ✔️but didn't like it:( Giving it a 3 star coz I did enjoy the book just not the last 15%.Also dis took me a week to read...whyyy??????????If you have read a book this is a different ending which I think might have been better but then again this is only my opinion soooo... OK so remember that guy Miranda was with while she was drunk at a party while they were in college? I think they were in the pool room or something? What if that guy was Iain and he was Emma's brother or something and they had somehow hatched a plan to lure Miranda and the others their so they could kill Miranda. And what if the motive for that was coz Miranda had forgotten abt being with him and he thought they had something special. I hope this makes sense....:)
I was not a fan of the character changes every chapter and the timeline jumps. I also felt like it was such a slow build-up that once things finally started happening it was almost jarring, and then it felt like everything ended quite abruptly.
While the overall concept of the story was intriguing, I was not the biggest fan of the layout.
No author I've read makes backstory as riveting as Lucy Foley. An excellent thriller. Kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
