I want to have something more to say about this book, but for the moment all I can say is, wow–believe the hype.
Is it perfect? Nope. Is it a heckuva read? Oh yeah–on the edge of your seat, can't believe this is a kids' book, kind of read.
As faddish throwaway young-adult fiction goes, this was surprisingly robust. Yes, it borrows very heavily from Battle Royale, but once it gets going, it's genuinely very entertaining and a nice little palate-cleanser. Looking forward to the two sequels now.
I knew right then I shouldn't open it. Dahil hindi ko na bibitawan. And yes, finished it with in 2days, Katniss Everdeen. The girl one fire. Stepped into Prim's shoes for the Hunger games.
Even books I'm enjoying don't often pull me in as much as I'd like these days - I find myself setting them down and not picking them up for weeks, even. But I found this in paperback recently and remembered being curious about it when I saw it in hardcover so I bought it. There are so many ways this book could have failed, building on the clichés it uses, but it didn't. I found myself engaged constantly, wondering what happened next, worrying about characters, and desperately needing to pick the book up again when I'd put it down.
I don't know. I don't really feel like analyzing it much beyond that, but I really enjoyed it. I'm going to find the second book as soon as I possibly can. And the third just came out! The final book! That's exciting
Books like this I don't even know how to judge. Was it good? Was it bad? Did I like it? I don't even know. I just know that I HAD TO KEEP READING IT UNTIL THE END OF IT.

I just re-read this and honestly the other girls want what the Hunger Games has
This is one of the most captivating books I've read in a long time. The story is engaging from the first chapter and I had a hard time putting down the book, reading it every spare moment I had.
I love this book. No, really I LOVE this book and I have to restrain myself while writing this review because if I don't all you are going to be reading is declarations of my love for The Hunger Games and really who wants to read six paragraphs of that? I can't even think of any good negatives to list to even things out because really I can't find any substantial bad thing to say about this book and the only part that sticks out would be a spoiler and honestly it's not a big deal and I completely understand it and it doesn't bother me. Read more.
This book certainly lived up to the hype.
A real page-turner!
Peeta is a great hero and Katniss...resourceful, canny and sharp, with a hard exterior shell that is marvellously breeched by her sister, her friend Gale, Rue and the hero.
Thankfully, I have Catching Fire, the sequel, on hand to dive straight back into the series!

Short review: This is a great book. The second is better. It is set in a post apocalyptic North America. There is a brutal government that requires each of the 12 districts in the country to send two teens (1 boy, 1 girl) to come and fight to the death. This is a mix of Lord of the Flies and Ender's Game with some teen romance thrown in. The second book is the best fiction book I have read this year, the first one is a close second.
The Hunger Games takes place in the nation of Panem, formerly known as North America. The Capitol is surrounded by twelve districts, each providing supplies for it. As a result of a rebellion in the past, each year the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from each district to participate in their reality show: The Hunger Games. All of the participants would kill each other off until one winner remains, while the people in the Capitol watch with excitement.Katniss Everdeen is a 16 years old girl living in District 12, one of the poorest mining district that often faces starvation. When her sister's name was drawn, Katniss immediately takes her place. Being an experienced hunter in the woods, she has a better chance of surviving. Chosen as the male tribute is Peeta Mellark, the gentle son of the baker. Together, they are sent to the Capitol to participate in the show.Soon, the Hunger Games begins. Twenty four participants, and only one of them will survive. This book is fast-paced and full of actions. While the description of the bloody scenes are not detailed, the level of violence shown is quite high. Our heroine, Katniss, faces some highly-skilled participants in the arena. With her strong and determined personality, Katniss draws the reader to root for her up until the end of the book. She also has a rebellious streak, which makes her character very interesting and likeable. I wish there are more heroines like her. :)The winner of the Hunger Games seems predictable, since it's not likely for the main character to be killed. But winning the game doesn't mean the end for our characters. This book ends so abruptly in a cliffhanger, leaving us impatient to read the sequel.Sadly, the translation for the Indonesian version is very disappointing. Word choices seem inappropriate, making sentences weird due to the use of misplaced slangs. Very uncomfortable to read. It's really too bad, since this is a really nice book. Hopefully the translator of [b:Catching Fire 6148028 Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) Suzanne Collins http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1268805322s/6148028.jpg 6171458] is doing a better job.
Absolutely amazing! I literally couldn't put it down when I started reading. Definitely one of my all time favourites.
Katniss Everdeen is every modern girl's hero. Tough and wizened by life's hard times, she also has weaknesses, self-doubt, and even a hint of romance in her life. I can see why this book has attracted so many YA readers, both male and female. It's—I use one of my favorite words here, “gritty”—edgy, but also endearing. You get a sense of Kat's love for her little sister Prim, her weaknesses in the Games, and her confusion regarding Gale and Peeta.
The plot itself reminded me of a mix between The Island, Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, and the TV show V. I am eager to pick up the next installment of this trilogy to find out what's next. This book kept me interested and engaged, which is something wonderfully powerful about most YA literature.
I really cannot say enough good things about this book! Unfortunately when I write reviews I always second guess what I say, so I will do my best to express my love.
From the moment I opened the pages, I read voraciously, wanting to see what would happen next! The characters are extremely well written, which makes the reader truly invested in their lives. I actually found myself tearing up as the plot progressed! Do not start this book before bedtime...you won't sleep.
Katniss, the main character, is such a spunky protagonist. I loved every minute of her narratives and was rooting for her throughout. As an educator, despite the brutality of this book, I would fully recommend it to any of my students!
Thank you Suzanne Collins and I cannot wait for the third book!
I think this might be the most popular book in my goodreads network. I could not put it down and just finished it in a post-bedtime, 2 hours on the sofa session. I'm ready to see the Capitol and Panem fall. Bring it on!
This book was quite entertaining. I enjoyed the suspense of the Hunger Games. Even though this book has a bit of the romance factor, it wasn't too overdone to be sweet and sappy. Maybe I'll read this one for my class!
Fairly good book. Surprising amount of gore and violence for something marked as ‘teen fiction'. Kids these days with their fight clubs and their hunting each other for sport...
Again I wish I could give half stars. This book is very popular and that usually puts me off but once I started reading I could not put it down. So why not five stars? I don't know. When I finished the book I was like hmmm can't stop thinking about it but not in a good way. I am interested in reading the next book to see if my opinion changes at all. I liked the characters and the development. I liked the world building, it was truly frightening. So what is my problem? I have no idea. It just did not jump out at me and say give me five stars. I will be reading the next book and I may even come back and change the star rating after...
I enjoyed this book, it definitely pulled me in. I was surprised that there wasn't more uprising as I would expect from a dystopian story. There is a sequel though, so I'm sure they're building up to something more.
Wow. This was a great piece of science fiction writing. Even though it is catagorized as Young Adult, the language, themes & plot were interesting to an old person.
This book was fast paced and enjoyable. It reminded me a lot of the “Uglies” series, only more violent. I'm doing it as a read-aloud for school and so far the kids are edge-of-the-seat interesting, so hopefully that continues.
I added this book because someone on my friend list recommended it and I trust their opnion. I liked it so much I bought the Audio CDs for dad for Christmas because he spends long hours on the road in the back roads of the oil field and he needs a little entertainment.
It has some really gory parts, it can be thought a little sickening at times too. But I loved it... that might mean I'm a little sickening too at times... oh, well.
I read the entire “Hunger Games” series when it first came out, so this wasn't new territory for me. However, when the previews for the movie first came out, Matt was really interested in reading the book (and this boy doesn't usually like reading that much! I was so excited!). So he was reading it and I was reading over his shoulder whenever I had the chance, so I decided to just pick it up and re-read the whole thing. For the movie's sake, of course. And I'll probably re-read the other two, because I can't not. But I'm trying to read them slower this time, because one of the complaints I had the first time I read the series was that it all moved too quickly in the second and third books — and I'm not sure if it was just because I was so eager to devour the books that I wolfed them down too quickly or if it was the way it was written. So I'm looking forward to it.
