This is perhaps Collins' last lucid effort before ill health and opium drained his powers. A tale of ghostly terror, relentless pace, tight narrative, and a doomed Countess characterize and distinguish this powerful Collins novelette.

This was a different Wilkie Collins than I have read before. I think I liked it a little better than the others. There is a little more ghosts and a little less family nonsense.
Really enjoyed the first three quarters of this book but I was disappointed with the ending. The suspense and intrigue built well but found the ending dragged on for too long with little in significant revelations in the last couple of chapters.
