This book has been my latest entertainment during my commutes to and from school. I wanted something funny after the depressing and violent Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. For the most part, this book was hilarious. Amy's commentary on everything from creepy old stuffed animals of hers to her love life to her crazy family had me laughing out loud to myself in the car constantly.
What I hadn't expected were the serious and sad parts mixed in. Amy talked about her Dad's struggle with MS, her relationship with her Mom, her sexual assault in her teenage years, and, very movingly, gun violence. I didn't expect the chapter dedicated to gun violence and the two girls killed at a screening of her film, but it was very moving and made me cry while on the expressway, which, for the record, I don't recommend trying.
I loved the chapter on being an Introvert as well, it was so wonderful to see such a prominent celebrity admit that they aren't super extroverted and social like celebs are “supposed to” be. I related so much to that chapter and it was so cool to know that even some celebrities are just as introverted as you are.
Overall, Amy's book was amazing. It was hilarious throughout, with some truly heartbreaking and devastating moments here and there. Amy always managed to bring a little humor into the sad parts, even when discussing her rape and her parents. I'm really really glad I read this and got to listen to Amy read it herself because it was such an insightful and humorous read despite the heavier moments throughout.
Very late to this, but loved its constant mix of high- and low-brow stories of what it's like to exist in a human body.
One word : Hilarious.
I never understood people who didn't find Amy Schumer funny.
As expected, the book did not disappoint. Had a few sad moments about her dad.
Would recommend.
A few chapters were really good, some were bearable, I didn't care much for the rest. It helps to listen to the audiobook in her voice. This was my first memoir of a comedian except for Mindy Kaling's short essays, I'm looking forward to reading another one by someone I actually admire like Amy Poehler maybe.
Funny and witty. Pretty inconsistent on many places. But fun read/listen with a few moments that make you think. And cringe.
It started off fresh and funny, but as I read I got sick of all the penis jokes and got bored. Story of her life was interesting, but I could have gone without excessive details on sex and genitalia. Also, how many times can you use the phrase “going down on” in a book that is not a porn book and that is not a memoir of a brothel worker?
I was also disgusted by the anti gun violence chapter, because she had the need to mention at least 3 times (or more) that she is not against guns, just agains gun violence. Well, Amy, you should be against guns! Did she repeat that message several times to not lose popularity among gun lovers or is that her actual opinion? Either way I'm disgusted.
For the most part I found this book enjoyable. I do find it interesting that the things that bother me about her are things she's said when put on the spot, but here in her book she's had a chance to write and rewrite and it sounds less harsh, so..... She still bugs me and I doubt I'll watch her stand up or movies, but I did laugh a few times while reading this book.
3.5 stars I absolutely adored this! Amy Schumer is hilarious, blunt and has this really down to Earth attitude about being ~famous and being ~loaded. What I was expecting a whole lot of sex jokes, but I got so much more. I really appreciated her honesty and her ability to keep the tone of the book light even when she was speaking about difficult issues (tw for physical and sexual abuse). Amy Schumer has a very lively personality, and I wish I had half of her self-confidence. I'm definitely going to check out her TV show and whatever movies she makes in the future.
Not particularly well-written or funny (I think Schumer is best experienced live when her personality and presence help sell her humor) but I learned a lot about Amy's childhood and came to admire all that she has accomplished. And the message of loving your body and owning your sexuality is a welcome one, especially if there are teenage girls or young adult women readers who might be able to learn from Amy's mistakes and avoid some of the humiliations that she, like many of us, endured.
I'm kind of over comedian memoirs from people younger than me. That said, Amy Schumer is funny, and there is a lot of entertaining material here. I was less interested in really understanding her as a person (wait, actors are people who experienced childhood?!).
Amy Schumer you are my hero! This book was exactly what I was looking for. Amy Schumer is a real person who is witty and charming. I love the diary references and how open she is about being an introvert. This book made me “have all the feels.” God I wish I could make this review longer but god I just loved it so so much that is all I got!
I love Amy Schumer's standup, and her show. We recently saw her live here in Orlando, and it was hilarious. Her book, however, is less comedic and more of a memoir of hard work coupled with sad life events.
