The mystery in this book managed to hold my interest throughout and even managed to surprise me a few times. While many characters kind of start out as stereotypes (the smooth criminal, the big thug, the loud angry cop &c) they develop well even in the one book and are interesting and vibrant. I did feel that the author leaned a bit too hard sometimes on Genevieve's “quirks” (ESPECIALLY her literal-mindedness, like even if you don't understand idioms “serious as a heart attack” isn't really difficult to parse, stuff like this comes up multiple times in every single conversation and it gets pretty old) but I did like that despite a few characters being put off by her in the beginning, the good guy characters are shown to change their behaviour to accommodate her needs instead of her needing to act more neurotypical. There is a hint of a developing romance because of course there is and it's not very interesting.
