How this book managed to be simultaneously cute and gripping at the same time, I will never know.
I'll always adore a love-against-the-odds story though, and a demon and a nephilim falling in love gave me exactly that. I will say that while the plot of this book is interesting and it keeps you engaged, this book very much focuses on Cass recovering and dealing with the trauma of living in an abusive home. Watching as she works to unlearn all the toxic and unhealthy things she learned growing up while also giving herself the space and grace to fall in love with Avitue was honestly really beautiful.
I also really like how the book doesn't make her all “magically cured” in the end, or somehow “fixed” now that she's in love with Avitue. It makes a point to mention that healing is a journey that she has been on for 3 years now and it is a journey that she will still continue to be on for years to come.
All in all: Cass's relationships with Ana and Zuriel made me cry, her relationship with Avitue made me swoon, the spicy scenes were lovely, and WINGS. Enough said.
Also regarding Cass and Avitue: find you a woman who will literally give you her soul and become a demon just to spend eternity with you?? Cassiel invented love fr.
This book fully fulfilled the craving I didn't know I had for a lesbian nephilim/succubus romance. I need more of that type please!
