Liz Teggalta is a successful journalist living in New York City, but despite her accomplishments, she feels increasingly disconnected from her life. Restless and searching for meaning, she stumbles upon an ad for a meditation retreat called "The Land of Drifters." Desperate for a change, Liz impulsively signs up, unaware that this decision will upend everything she thought she knew about herself. At the retreat, Liz uncovers shocking truths about her identity: she was born into a long line of witches, and her biological parents were murdered by the Vagabond Covenant, a sinister group of shape-shifting witches who steal human identities. The Vagabonds killed Liz's parents when she was six years old because they feared Liz's untapped power that could destroy them all. Liz's adoptive mother, who also happens to be a powerful witch, had been hiding these truths from her to protect her. Liz is stunned to discover that she possesses the rare ability to wield all four elemental powers, making her the "Drifter" prophesied to lead the fight against the Vagabonds. At the retreat, she joins forces with other witches who have been hiding from the world, but they are fractured and mistrustful after years of persecution. As Liz struggles to accept her destiny, she learns that Mr. Vewling, the head of the Vagabond Covenant, has already assumed the identity of the U.S. president, using his power to manipulate world events for the Covenant's gain. Time is running out, and Liz must master her abilities before Vewling consolidates his control and the Vagabonds launch their final plan: enslaving humanity by assuming control of key global figures. Throughout her journey, Liz is haunted by memories of her parents' murder and the guilt of having survived while they didn't. As she delves deeper into her powers, she learns to "drift" through meditation, which allows her to unlock suppressed memories and confront her past trauma. These revelations help Liz realize that to defeat the Vagabonds, she must not only embrace her magical abilities but also lead the divided Drifters in unison.
