So, people suck in the apocalypse. This, i think, is my first CJ Tudor book. I have to say the writting trully kept you going. Every chapter ends in a cliffhanger of sorts, sometimes a cheesy one, but no less effective.
We follow 3 MCs in 3 different situations related to the retreat, a place to stay safe/also be experimented on/isolated on/undisclosed others, in the middle of society colapse due to a virus (that's not super explained but can spread through absolutely anything).
The atmosphere is trully the MC here. This world, and while we don't get the full story, only what the characters let slip, is very interesting. And the weather. The weather is the worse, i mean this constant snow storms, it makes the tension neverending. Now the story, or stories interconnected were a bit predictable, and early on you can sort of see a bit of the reveals. Still, you can't seem to stop reading.
So, since it's a thriller of sorts, the ending matters right? Well not so much. It was fine. But i found the journey to be much more compelling.
I was going to go for three stars, just because the dog stayed alive. Then she went and killed the dog.
Pacing was not good, the mystery wasn't all that mysterious and the epilogue was just cheesy. Oh, and there's a “just for fun” rape scene. How edgy.
I was so excited going into this book because it had all the elements I love in books; multiple povs, snowy setting, isolated.
The book started off strong but as it went on it kept going down, i started reading this on the 23rd of january 2023 and i got upto 45% after that it got boring and repetitive so i read a few pages here and there and finally decided to finish it last night.
Overall I would say it is an entertaining read but not as engaging as I would have liked.
A world ravaged by a virus
A coash crash
A stranded cable car
A group of survivors at a remote research station
It's so very very cold.
It's all linked, but what's the link. Who? Where? or................ WHEN?
5 out of 5 for sheer entertainment and originality. Hope there's a sequel, it definitely feels like there could be one.
This was an excellent book! I wish the twisted had been revealed slightly later because after it was there was quite a bit of book left and it felt a little off but a great read it is hard to talk about with out spoiling it though. 4.75/5 but rounded up.
I was really looking forward to reading this book after hearing positive comments about it on The Currently Reading Podcast.
It has an interesting premise and in the end, the story was okay but did not end up being a favorite for me. The author did do one thing interesting with this book, but other than that, the characters fell flat and I didn't find myself that interested in the story.
I will try other books by this author, though, and maybe have better luck.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this book.
Three stories that are connected by a common theme.
Claustrophobic and eerily atmospheric.
I've been trying books outside my usual genre to see if I enjoy anything besides fantasy. This one sounded pretty good. It's kind of post apocalyptic/thriller.
There's been a deadly virus outbreak. Hannah is on a bus on her way to safety at the Retreat. It's a safe haven in the mountains away from the infected. The bus crashes.
Meg is on a cable car, also headed for the Retreat. The cable car stops.
Carter is at the Retreat already. Is it really a safe haven?
This was ok for me. I didn't love the characters. I did think it was pretty realistic as far as the rich getting preferential treatment if something like this happened. Overall, it's a decent story, but not one that will stick with me.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an e-arc.
I just finished the Drift by C J Tudor and here are my thoughts.
Hannah wakes to find the coach she was in has crashed during a blizzard. They were all fleeing their private school. The problem is someone is infected with a virus sweeping the world and a bunch of already dead bodies.
No one wants their secrets laid bare but they will have to work together to find a way out or die trying.
A former detective, Meg wakes to find herself on a stranded cable car with zero memory of how she got there. They were all heading for the retreat but that was all they remember. They don't have food or water and one someone ends up dead, Meg finds herself having no suspects but suspecting everyone.
Carter works providing vaccines against the virus, in a chalet with others who ended up there. Soon the dead bodies start piling up and when the generator starts to fail, what they were keeping out may now be able to get in and no one is safe.
What do these people all have in common? The threat lurking is more dangerous than anyone can comprehend.
I will admit, the beginning of the book was a bit confusing. Trying to figure out whose POV was who and what was going on... Took me a while to get into the swing but once I did..... WOWWWWWW.
The settings were clever considering they were all self contained little stories. I always find when I read multiple POV that I will always gravitate to one POV more but that didn't happen here. I was equally invested in how they ended up where they did, who they all were and what was going to happen.
There was a lot going on, a lot of mystery and intrigue that kept me clinging on until the very end. I seriously had no idea what was going to happen at any point. I loved that. I usually figure books out but not this one. It kept me on my toes and the writing was lucid and shockingly brilliant.
The plot was really well constructed and I loved the idea of a virus that didn't create a zombie but something different. It felt unique and original with some really clever mystery undertones. The author is a master of her craft!
I loved the ending! The only downside to the book was just the confusion I had at the beginning but that was just me I think! If you love a little mystery and dystopian vibes in your general fiction then this has to be your next book.
4.5 stars. So glad @netgalley gifted me a copy of this book and thank you to @penguinrandomhouseca for this opportunity.
