5/5 - Hands down one of the best books I've ever read! Based around the real life events of the Massacre of Nanking, this book is just as much unsettling and frightening as it is desperately sad. Can't recommend enough for people looking for a Horror / Mystery novel mixed in with Historical Fiction that will leave you feeling thoroughly numb by the end.
I appear to be in the minority here but I did not enjoy this book. I don't want to sit here and bash an author's work so I'll keep it short. I didn't like the main character or her reasons for trying to find this film, I didn't like the setting of the club or that entire side story line and I really didn't like the conclusion. Not one for me I'm afraid.
Loved this book! One of those stories that has everything...wonderfully written, well paced, interesting setting, compelling characters and a complex and unique plot line. Highly recommend for literary fiction and historical fiction lovers who like a bit of mystery.
I loved this book more for the historical lesson that the mystery of the plot. I had never heard of the atrocities that happen in Nanking. The different timelines tying in together was fun but ultimately I enjoyed the description of the Tokyo city and society more than the protagonist's past and why she needed to now what happened in Nanking.
