Nowhere near as good as Blood Queen but better than Iron Queen and infinitely better than the abominable Fire Queen.
But why do we need pages after pages of dialogue that serves the writer's incompetence to fully grasp the meaning of the word ‘‘repetitive''? Why do we need an inconsistent, albeit fascinating, heroine that first wants peace, then is all for power and glory and conquering other countries, then peace again, then...you get the point. Why do we need to turn Harald Hardrada into another inconsistent character who is rather irritating and insecure?
Why the fuck do we need nicknames like ‘Lily' and ‘Hari'? Why do we need ridiculous sex scenes that are cringe-worthy and read like my grandmother's Harlequins?
At least, we didn't have libels against Christianity and the Historical Notes were useful and informative and not a shameless pat yourself in the back on behalf of the writer.
It's a pity, really. Joanna Courtney chooses the best eras and the finest heroines for her books but doesn't seem to be able to succeed in her mission.
