I loved reading this book and found it to be thrilling from the beginning to the end! The only downside was that ending was a little bit predictable but overall it was a great read!
3.5 stars maybe?
It is a good read and I while there were moments that lost my attention, for the most part I lost track of time while reading this. It is pretty obvious what is going on, but not the scale of it and there are potentially other things at work. All this kept my attention and had me eager to know how things would work out.
I really like Margot as a character and her insight into things going on around her were... nice. She isn't completely oblivious, but she wants to stay–wants to be good and unobtrusive, so she lets things slide. I get it. Her decisions made sense. I feel like the tiny little romance wasn't really needed and perhaps a little fast, but then I think about the situation and how long they were really spending together and it makes more sense.
There are many creepy vibes here, but Margot doesn't really go searching for answers, so the book can feel quite long at times. Towards the end is when I could not put the book down– which is why the formal 4 stars.
I will recommend this to people, but it is not for someone wanting fast-paced. This is a subtler and more atmospheric thriller.
Margot is an orphan who is unlucky in life but lucky in choices. After losing her family in a car accident she ends up at the Palmer House. She is the only lucky girl to get her own room (night terrors = no roommates) and then luck happens once more as a rich family have chosen to have her come and stay with them.
She is to be a companion to the family's daughter, Agatha, who cannot speak, is mildly catatonic, but otherwise healthy. During her stay at the family's home strange occurrences happen and Margot isn't sure things are really as they seem...
What a fun read! I had a hard time putting this down and if not for having to shovel food in my mouth I probably wouldn't have stopped at all
I was enthralled by the first half of the book but by the second half, it dragged on and I was bored. I predicted the series of events after 50% in and when it got to the reveal, it ended up being underwhelming for me. I was not fond of the romance since romance in mystery/thriller/horror books is one of my bookish pet peeves and it's not the book's fault but rather a personal preference. Although, I still appreciate Alender's writing, it didn't do much for me to completely enjoy the story.
